For the past four weeks, our Brand & Marketing team were a bit more international than normal, with Sari joining us for work experience all the way from Austria! 🌍

With a passion for photography, video, and design, she was a natural fit. She wrangled campaign shoots (even jumping behind the lens!) and worked on everything from brand collateral to social assets. Can we keep you, Sari?!

We’re big believers in giving young’uns a real look at the industry and the opportunity to get involved, so work experience will always matter to us 🖤

Thanks for joining us and throwing yourself into everything, Sari. Our only complaint is that Austria gets you back, but at least we know where our next B&M trip is taking us!

Sam from Laing Homes knows a thing or two about building. So, when he decided to build a home of his own, designed to become a short-term stay, he handed us a seriously tricky block 😅

The site was steep, wedged between tight boundaries, and had some of the worst access we’ve encountered (and that’s saying something!). Then there was the five-metre-high retaining wall… just a few challenges, you could say!

Looking at the outcome, you’d never know this though 😍

The result is a clever split-level design that works with the slope and makes the most of the elevated outlook. Instead of adding a deck, balustrade-height glazing opens the living space to the view, giving you that on-the-deck feeling from inside.

Shepparton Christian College had a good problem – it was growing!

This problem meant that the admin centre and library were still suited to a school half the size. And while the College had become a thriving independent school with a strong community of its own, the campus still looked and felt more like a church with a school attached.

It was time the school had a face of its own 🙌

Led by Tim, who clocked up a few frequent-flyer points to stay close to everything happening on the ground, we designed a new administration centre that gives the College a face to the broader community, a much stronger identity, and a huge lift in everyday amenity.

While we were at it, we also added a new food technology room, canteen, science centre and toilets.

It’s not just more space. The school now has its own face, its own soul and a campus that feels like Shepparton Christian College.

We’re pretty proud to have played a part in that.

A pharmacy, a robot and an ocean-view apartment under one roof?

It might sound like the start of a bad joke, but this is what we helped bring to life for Complete Care Pharmacy Penguin!

Downstairs, the pharmacy has had a full upgrade – new consultation rooms, medicine preparation areas and a drive-thru service. There’s also a fully automated robotic system preparing medicines and supporting online orders 🤯

Upstairs, a brand-new, multi-level apartment makes the most of the northern ocean views, with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, high ceilings and a large open-plan living area.

Two very different uses under one roof meant the exterior had to work pretty hard, balancing a professional business frontage with the more relaxed feel of coastal living.

First up in our education series is a project that dropped us right in the middle of school life, quite literally!

Our first piece of work with St Brendan-Shaw College unfolded across two stages.

Stage one delivered the Student Wellbeing Centre, bringing student-facing wellbeing and learning support services together with staff offices and a direct connection to the staffroom. It created a dedicated, approachable space for students to access more targeted support 🤝

Next came a full rebuild of the upper floor of the Shaw Building. We opened up the layout to create contemporary classrooms, generous student gathering spaces and plenty of flexibility for the College to adapt how the spaces are used well into the future.

The tricky bit? Doing all of that smack-bang in the middle of a busy, operating school.
Contractor access, subcontractor movements and construction had to work around everyday school life, requiring plenty of coordination between St Brendan-Shaw College, our team and builders, De Jong & Sons, to keep disruption to a minimum.

Devonport Christian School is a campus we’ve come to know pretty well.

Through our longstanding relationship with the school, we’ve worked alongside its team as the campus has grown and evolved. One major stage of that work was a new secondary learning environment supporting the school’s expansion through to Grade 10 🙌

Designed as one generous volume, the building has its own architectural identity while still feeling embedded within the existing campus. A new bridge connects old and new, creating a clear physical and visual link between the two.

At its centre is a shared hub known as the ‘airport waiting room’. Sitting between Home Economics, staff areas, general learning and performance spaces, it can shift throughout the day to support group learning, presentations, performances, informal gatherings or time between classes.

The spaces outside the classrooms work hard, too. Circulation areas and integrated tiered seating all create more opportunities for learning, interaction and everyday school life.

Working with Devonport Christian School over time meant we could design this stage with the wider campus in mind, adding much-needed capacity while building on the strong sense of community already there 🖤

We’ve spent a fair bit of time in schools over our journey at S. Group. While we haven’t had to sit any exams, we’ve still done plenty of homework…

Some of our longest-standing professional relationships are in education. We’ve worked alongside schools like Victory Christian College, Launceston Christian School, St Brendan-Shaw College, and Devonport Christian School over the years – some for close to a decade!

With some schools, we’ve gone full BAM (brand + architecture + marketing).

Alongside masterplans and designing new learning spaces, our work has also crossed over into branding work, wayfinding and signage, design of school materials, publishing regular newsletters, and designing and developing websites 💪

Over the next few weeks, we’re putting education architecture front and centre and sharing a closer look at some of our recent projects – watch this space 👀

This year marks our fourth Bali trip! Four of our crew have also been every single year. A coincidence? Not a chance.

Last week, a group of us once again packed our laptops and linen and headed off on our annual Bali adventure. It was every bit as fun as it looks!

Plenty of good times but also plenty of good work being done from abroad. We say it every year, but it’s why we keep returning. Good work and productive meetings don’t have to happen from the boardroom, at least not at S. Group.

We’ve always done things a little differently – and we wouldn’t have it any other way. We have happy staff who do great work, and we genuinely enjoy being around each other. That’s a pretty big win in our eyes.

So, after returning for the fourth year, we’re pretty confident the research around remote work stacks up, and that we’ll be checking in from Bali again next year 🌴
