Chip-on-Glass (COG) LED Has Arrived

After years of development, COG is moving from the lab to real-world installations.

BOE MLED chip-on-glass (COG) technology feature better thermal stability and higher evenness than PCB-based surface-mounted device (SMD) LED, which leads to superior image quality and uniformity.

The key advantage of BOE MLED COG technology lies in its precision and the ability to achieve finer pitch displays, making it an ideal choice for applications that require high-detail visuals. In contrast, BOE MLED COB displays are known for their robustness, high brightness, and excellent color performance. In addition, BOE MLED technologies enable better heat dissipation while the Active-matrix (AM) driving enables instantaneous brightness control and ultra-low flicker.

From a deployment perspective, COG introduces meaningful advantages at the mechanical and operational layers.

The glass substrate enables a simplified 6 mm structural profile and a 25%+ reduction in total enclosure weight compared to traditional architectures. Larger module units up to 13.5 inches on a single board and 23.1 inches at assembly reduce panel seams, minimize tolerance stacking, and accelerate installation throughput.
This combination of precision manufacturing and structural efficiency directly improves panel consistency across the full display surface, especially at fine pixel pitches. With peak brightness capability reaching 3000 nits, COG provides the performance headroom required for mission-critical environments, control rooms, corporate display walls, and premium public installations.
SMD and COB remain strong options depending on project constraints, ambient conditions, and budget parameters.
SMD continues to offer reliable performance across broad pixel pitch ranges and is cost-optimized for large LED deployments.

COB provides outstanding durability, high brightness, enhanced contrast, and resilience in environments where physical impact resistance or cleaning cycles are key considerations.
