We’re pleased to share that IT River has officially joined ClubIT, bringing together two locally based IT service providers with a shared focus on reliable support, strong client relationships, and practical technology outcomes.

IT River joining ClubIT now means two of the regions longest running Business IT Service providers in our Northern NSW region are one entity, creating a combined organisation of over 200 years combined experience in ICT.

For IT River clients, this change is designed to be fully seamless.

Your existing team, support arrangements, and local knowledge remain in place, Kevin and the team will continue to provide day to day support, now backed by ClubIT’s broader technical capability, security expertise, and operational scale.

ClubIT has been supporting local businesses and community organisations for over 20 years, with a strong focus on healthcare, community services, and regional organisations. By joining forces, we’re able to provide enhanced support coverage, improved security services, and greater depth across cloud, infrastructure, and cybersecurity, while continuing the personal service you value.

Statement from Ben Smith – Director, ClubIT

“We’re really pleased to welcome IT River into ClubIT. Kevin has built a strong reputation based on trust, local knowledge, and genuinely caring about his clients, which aligns closely with how we operate at ClubIT.

This transition allows us to strengthen the level of support and security we provide, while keeping the personal service that clients value. Our focus is on making this change smooth and positive, and on continuing to support clients with reliable, practical technology solutions into the future.”

Statement from Kevin Miller – Director, IT River

“Joining ClubIT is an exciting step for IT River and, most importantly, for our clients. ClubIT brings depth in areas like cybersecurity, cloud services, and operational support, while sharing the same values around service quality and long-term relationships.

I’m confident this move gives our clients the best of both worlds — continuity with the people they know, and the backing of a larger, highly capable team.”

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to reach out.

We’re really excited about the next chapter and look forward to continuing to support you with the same trusted service, now backed by a broader team and capability.

SCAM ALERT
Please friends, read this post. I'm sorry its long. It's important. There has been an unbelievable spike in serious scams happening at the moment. People are having prepaid mobiles opened in their names, Medicare cards reissued, phone numbers ported from their own SIM to a new SIM (which give the scammer access to the SMS security codes sent by google, facebook, many banks etc) with everything from thousands of dollars stolen from their banks to total identity theft. These people are NOT getting their money back.

I am sure you all know I don't usually post or share anything that I haven't checked. This isn't just stuff that I have found online. These are people coming to me (personally and also my business) for help who have been hit in the last few weeks. I am actually a bit surprised it hasn't been front page news.

I have always believed that the bank IS the safest place to keep money and that EFTPOS / paywave is perfectly safe, and still do. But you have to participate in your own security and do at least the minimum to make yourself a hard target instead of an easy one. The bank should pay you back if it's their fault, but if they can shift the blame to you (or anyone else) you're toast.

People are both clever and stupid. You don't how clever the employee at Telstra/Optus, Medicare, or your bank is. Anyone can get a job there. You can be certain that these scammers are clever or at least are using very clever systems they KNOW work to successfully meet the security criteria for Telstra or Medicare and maybe even your bank.

Many of us outsource our security to our phone or email company by setting an email or SMS as "2 factor authentication". Scammers are starting to work around this by beginning their attacks by stealing your phone or email accounts first. I have been shocked how easily someone can open a Prepaid phone account (in your name!) then use that mobile account as ID for the phone company to port your phone number onto the scammer's fake account! If you ever find your phone not working suddenly, treat it as an emergency to contact your phone company. I have now seen this done multiple times, and also medicare cards reissued. It is incredible that this can happen, but it does.

I think there are 3 things you and I should do TODAY to minimise our risk. I HATE this stuff. Security is NEVER convenient, but convenience is NEVER secure. I like doing all my stuff "the easy way" and my bank doesn't even have branches! So it is not convenient at all for me to meet these criteria. But I think the scammer situation has gotten urgent, every one needs to secure themselves now, even me, so I plan on taking these steps 2 and 3 today.

Step 1: Have a PROPER, UNIQUE password for all services. I KNOW THIS SUCKS. But it IS step one. For a start, you ARE in control of your passwords whether you like it or not. If your password leaks, and is used to steal money from you, the bank will NOT refund your money. If you have any doubts at all about the safety of your passwords, (I'm looking at you, "Fluffy89") please cancel whatever plans you have for a couple of hours. Learn how to make a proper, secure, easy to use password. I have some information available here on this topic: www.itriver.com.au/makemeapassword.php (there are 3 methods detailed there, and I will likely add a fourth soon) but i think the very least you should do is DOUBLE your current password - you will still easily remember it but it will at least have changed recently (in case it has been revealed by a recent data breach) and will hopefully then exceed the minimum safe password length of 13 characters (more on that on the above link).
So if your password is something like "Fluffy89" then update it to "Fluffy89Fluffy89" at the very very least.

Step 2:
Call your phone company and INSIST that your account is not able to be modified online or by phone. Usually this just means they make notes on the account to NOT accept modifications to your account unless they are in made store and in person. Some companies have a special feature they enable/disable on accounts for this purpose.

Step 3:
Do step 2 again - with your bank. Call them and insist that notes are on the account to never allow modifications except in branch, and set your daily withdraw/transfer limits as low as you can tolerate.

I'll repeat... I HATE this stuff. Security is NEVER convenient, but convenience is NEVER secure. I like doing all my stuff "the easy way" and my bank doesn't even have branches! So it is not convenient at all for me to meet these criteria. But I think everyone should, even me, so I plan on taking these steps today.

Good luck, it's a damned sh*tfight out there.
