Is the art of hand crafted logos dead?

In a world where cutting corners and cheaper alternatives are luring clients in everywhere, do people even care how a logo is created these days?

I’m of the opinion there’s still plenty of you out there that still appreciate true craftsmanship and what value that brings to a company's brand. The respect and appreciation for something that’s born from the imagination of a human. How that vision materialises from brain to hand to a blank canvas, until it’s finally perfected and executed on the computer.

No matter how convincing AI might get to mimicking logos, if anyone is like me - the instant I discover something was AI generated… the feeling, the emotion, the soul behind it… All of it evaporates in an instant! It’s not deliberate, it’s not an objection to AI, it’s just a real and honest feeling.

In the meantime, I’ll keep pushing the value of my work, the passion behind it and the intent and purpose I pour into every client that comes my way. I understand there will always be people that just need a "budget" logo. And that’s ok. There’s plenty of options out there for you.

My target audience is those who value the craft and their brand.

Here’s a few of my favourite refined sketches of some of the lettering style logos I’ve created over the years that were born by putting pencil and pen to paper.

Every now and then, a particular industry starts gravitating toward my work. It usually begins with one project that lands well enough for others to say, “Hey, I like what they did there. Let’s reach out to the creative responsible.”

This time, the success and exposure from my Black Hops project led to 13 independent craft breweries trusting me with their brand vision and direction. No complaints here, there's obvious perks. ;)

Out of those 13, 12 handed me a complete blank canvas and full creative freedom. Of those 12, 11 of them look almost identical to the original first concept I presented.

This month I had the pleasure of creating my second custom mural for Admiralty Capital Group.

I absolutely love getting the opportunity to stare point blank at a wall and paint large-scale murals all day. Transforming an otherwise dull space into something creative and eye catching that can help businesses brighten up their workspace.

From bold typographic quotes to intricate illustrative scenes, these handcrafted murals become brand statements that people remember, talk about and love taking photos in front of.

Welcoming myself back to the office today, it was a pleasure to boot up my computer and see that one of my presentations was featured on Behance through the holiday break.

In a world where AI is the hot topic and some creatives feel under threat by it, it’s comforting to be approached by a company that’s embracing AI, yet still understands the importance of human authenticity and how that translates to the crafting of their own logo and visual identity.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for AI replacing the mundane tasks, but my pledge to my clients is this: When it comes to creativity, there’s not an AI system that will replace my creative decision making, my tone of voice, my crafted approach to my process or the generation of any logo or visual asset.

A lot of people will see a logotype and think: “It’s just a font.”

In reality, nothing could be further from the truth. When I create a logotype, I build it from the ground up… Every curve, weight, counter and terminal is deliberately shaped to embody the personality, values and essence of the person or brand it represents. No drop down menu "select a font" here. Every design decision has intent and purpose behind it to reflect and represent the client.

“But it still looks like a normal typeface.”

That’s the ultimate compliment!

The crafting lies in the subtlety: Refining proportions until the letters feel effortless and familiar, yet quietly distinctive; weaving in tiny, thoughtful details that make it unmistakably personal.

This custom logotype was crafted for Michael Fischer - an extension of who he is, not just what he does.

I had a lot of fun illustrating these bad boys. Ultimately these concepts never went ahead, so to give them a little love I’m going to dedicate this post to all the Man U supporters out there. In particular my boy, Steve Chappos. Funniest geezer I know.

Looking forward to regaining some momentum here with a wide variety of new projects coming up.
