Phone and SMS are on the rise. The latest trend is the Flubot Scam, which claims you have a missed delivery from companies such as DHL or that you have a "voicemail" that you can access by clicking on a link. These scams aim to steal your passwords so they can gain access to sensitive data in your personal or work accounts.

These are a threat to everyone, particularly those who are unsuspectingly caught off guard.

Here is a guide on what to look out for and how to protect yourself.

Since August 2021, many Australians have been getting scam text messages about tracking a delivery, missed calls or voicemails, along with a link to download some software. If you receive one of these messages, do not click or tap on the link. Delete the message immediately.

As you may be aware, support for Windows 7 is ending on the 14th of January 2020.

What does this mean?

While the operating system will continue to function, support for security updates will no longer continue. For this reason alone it is going to be important to upgrade, particularly for business users with sensitive data. Keeping security up-to-date is of paramount importance to any business, as failing to do so not only puts your own information at risk,it also opens you up to the consequences of the recently implemented data breach laws if your systems become compromised.

A secondary factor is that app developers will begin to cease supporting Windows 7 for the latest versions of their software which will be particularly relevant to those who use proprietary software for their businesses if they wish to stay up to date with the latest versions.

Upgrading is a good option for computers less than 3 years old and is relatively inexpensive, however purchasing (a) new computer(s) and migrating your existing data across may be a better solution for those with older machines, especially those exceeding the 5 year mark.

Do you have Virgin Mobile or Virgin Mobile Broadband?

If you do, and you use the email address provided by Virgin it is time for you to setup an email elsewhere.

Virgin Mobile Australia has multiple reports of email outages, and if reports are to be believe all email accounts under the domain .com.au are now inactive (e.g. cannot send or receive). The webmail portal is inaccessible, Virgin Mobile Customer Service is swapped with calls, and anyone emailing you will not be getting notified that the emails are not getting through.
