Some examples of Scam SMS currently doing the rounds. Got these out of my "Spam & Blocked" folder in Android Messages, and they're all from this week.
So, let's go through them and point out ways we can identify spam and scams.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT click links in ANY SMS.
1. A "Missed Call" message with a link.
If you receive a legit message about a missed call, it won't have a link, It will instead tell you to call Message Bank, usually on 101 (Telstra) or 321 (Optus).
2. Same as #1.
3. No shipping company will ever ask you to confirm your details for a delivery.
4. Legit Unpaid Toll notices are Posted to you by snail mail.
They never come in through SMS.
5. MyGov / ATO will NEVER contact you by SMS.
6. This one is a bit more tricky. as some companies, such as TPG send you SMS if you're behind on your bills.
The trick to this is if you don't recognize the company, in this case "Linkt", then it's probably a scam and can be ignored.
IF it's claiming to be from a company you do recognize, such as Telstra, Do NOT click the link, instead phone the company with their publicly listed phone number and ask them. The real company will be able to tell you if it's real or not.
7. This one is also a bit tricky.
In this example, the URL starts with "Webmail" which is a big red flag. Best ignore and assume it's a scam.
