I'm often asked about internet speeds, and why they're important. Now while Flight Simulator is not important (to some) - this update demonstrates quite nicely the need for faster internet. I'm downloading this, at home right now. I unfortunately live at the end of about 1.2 Km of Copper from my nearest node on Fibre to the Node. That meant I was lucky if I managed 20Mbits / Second, real world download (real world is the difference between hypothetical and even to some degrees, speedtest, as even speedtest uses the best networks etc.) No, realistically, on a download like this, I was lucky to be getting 20 Mbits/s.
So how am I getting 51 you ask? By chance, I live about 2 Km from my shop, which is lucky enough to get Fibre to the Curb. 100 Mbits/s Theoretical or about 80 real world.
I then spent a little bit of money and I set up a point to point 5Ghz network with some really high masts to get over most of the trees. I could get faster than 50-60 with higher masts as I didn't clear all of the trees - but the price of going higher is much more expensive.
Instead, I now get about twice the speed download and about 8 times the upload speed. I also now only pay 1 internet bill!
As I finish this post, I have just reached 6% download and it's been going for about 45 minutes. I expect that it will take quite a lot of hours for it to be finished - but at least it will be today! At less than half the speed - it would be fathers day before it finished and I wouldn't get the chance to even do a circuit.
