LAUNCHING SOON đź©· The Creative Journalist

Martina came to me with a book. But the vision was always much bigger than the book.

After a 30-year career in consulting, Martina’s own experience with cancer became the catalyst for a completely new direction. When she couldn’t find the kind of practical, positive and creative support she needed while navigating her own diagnosis and treatment, she began creating it herself.

Now she’s bringing together her professional experience, art therapy training and lived experience to build The Creative Journalist — supporting women as they navigate cancer and other major life transitions including divorce, menopause and career change.

Through her soon-to-be-published books, creative workshops, retreats and 1:1 support, Martina is creating the kind of support that can be hard to find between appointments and beyond the immediate professional care — helping women process what they’re going through, feel more supported in the spaces in between, and work out what comes next.

So while I’ve been designing The Very Helpful Cancer Journal, we’ve also been building the brand and platform around it.

⚡️Brand strategy + visual identity
⚡️Website + online shop
⚡️Workshop bookings
⚡️1:1 sessions
⚡️Email list + lead nurturing
⚡️A platform she can continue to grow well beyond book one.

The goal? When The Very Helpful Cancer Journal launches at the beginning of October, Martina isn’t just launching a book. She’s launching a business that’s ready to sell the book, welcome new clients, nurture her audience and start building a community around The Creative Journalist.

And it’s almost ready! 👀

I feel like traditional publishing has had very good PR.

Get the publishing deal. Get the advance. See your book in bookstores. Officially become A Published Author™.

Lovely.

But if you’re an entrepreneur, consultant or expert publishing a book after 20+ years of building a career, I think there’s a much more useful question to ask:

What do you actually want your book to do?

Because you might care less about building a career as an author and more about building authority in the career you already have.

You might want the book to lead to speaking opportunities. Introduce more people to your ideas. Support your services. Grow your platform. Or turn decades of knowledge into something tangible that you’re bloody proud to put your name on.

And suddenly, things like controlling your title, cover, timeline and how your book fits into the rest of your business become pretty significant.

A major publishing deal can absolutely open doors. For the right author and the right book, traditional publishing can make perfect sense.

But it’s not automatically the gold star of publishing while self-publishing sits over in the corner wearing a homemade badge.

They’re different business models.

And when your book is part of something much bigger than book sales alone, it’s worth choosing the model based on what you want the book to achieve.

Not which one sounds fanciest when you tell people at dinner.

I’m back with 📚 Books I Love 🩷 the series where I talk about my favourite books and the design features which make them.

Today I’m chatting about the luxe design features you can choose when authors decide to do their own print run for their book (ie not print on demand where the options are more limited).

Special mentions today to the gatefold cover and spot gloss finish (be still my beating heart). Seriously it’s a designers dream when we get to do all the premium finishes ❤️‍🔥

When Railene first came to me, she wasn’t just launching a book. She was stepping into a whole new chapter as a non-fiction author, speaker and thought leader.

While Day One Again is being published through Healing House Publishing, I had the privilege of designing the book itself in collaboration with the publishing team. Alongside that, Railene wanted everything around the book to feel just as considered as the book itself.

Together we created:
❤︎ the book design
❤︎ an author visual brand
❤︎ a custom Wordpress website
❤︎ launch graphics and marketing collateral
❤︎ business cards and bookmarks

This is one of the biggest advantages of working with one creative studio.

I’m not designing a website without understanding the book.
I’m not creating launch graphics without understanding the brand.
I’m not making marketing materials without knowing where you’re heading next.

Every piece builds on the last, so your audience experiences one consistent story instead of a collection of disconnected visuals.

It’s also just... easier. You don’t have to explain your vision over and over to different designers. You have one point of contact who understands where you’re headed and keeps every visual touchpoint moving in the same direction.

The best part? Working with a publisher doesn’t mean you’re limited to the services they offer. I regularly collaborate with publishing houses to design books, while also supporting authors with everything beyond the pages — author branding, websites, launch campaigns and ongoing marketing as their platform grows.

Because a book is only one part of your author journey. And there isn’t one neat little customer journey.

Someone might find your book on Amazon.
Someone else might hear you speak first.
Another person might stumble across your website six months after reading your book.

The common thread? Every touchpoint should feel like it belongs to the same author.

Your book deserves a brand that carries the story even further.

Day One Again by Railene Turner-Rose releases this September, and I can’t wait to see it out in the world. 📚

📚 So excited to reveal this cover for a project I’ve worked on recently with Healing House Publishing 🌎 and debut author Railene Turner-Rose Railene Turner-Rose. ✨

One of my favourite parts of designing books is finding a visual language that feels as honest as the story inside.

Day One Again isn’t a picture-perfect, feel-good memoir. It’s bold, confronting, funny and deeply human. Railene’s writing has been described as a bit of a gut punch, and from the very beginning we knew the cover couldn’t hide behind pretty imagery or overcomplicate the message.

Instead, we leaned into simplicity. Strong typography. A restrained palette of off-white, black and bold red. The repeated title becomes a visual reminder that starting again isn’t a one-off moment. It’s a choice we make over and over again.

It’s always a privilege to help bring someone’s story into the world, especially when the design feels so deeply connected to the author’s voice.

I can’t wait for everyone to read this one. ❤️

Ahh the emotions of sending off design concepts. A sense of achievement, relief in cracking the creative process, feeling really proud of the work, the excitement hoping that they’re going to love them as much as you do…

Aaaand the agonising wait to hear back 🤪

PS I just sent brand identity concepts off. This is my current situation until further notice…
