Heads Up: Australia-Wide AusAlert Test – Monday 27 July

On Monday 27 July at 2:00 pm AEST (1:30 pm ACST / 12:00 pm AWST), the Australian Government will conduct the first nationwide test of the new AusAlert emergency warning system.

If you have a compatible mobile phone, tablet or smartwatch, you can expect:
• A loud siren-like alert for around 10 seconds
• Your device may vibrate
• A message clearly stating “TEST MESSAGE – NO ACTION REQUIRED”

This is only a test. There is no action required.

A few important things to know:
• The alert may sound even if your device is on Silent or Do Not Disturb.
• If you have a hidden or emergency phone, or you’re in an environment where a loud alert could cause concern, consider turning the device off or placing it into Airplane Mode before the scheduled test.
• Not every device will receive the alert at exactly the same time, and some older devices may not receive it at all.

The new AusAlert system is designed to deliver faster, more reliable emergency warnings during bushfires, floods, severe weather and other major incidents using cell broadcast technology.

For more information, visit the official AusAlert website: https://www.ausalert.gov.au/alerts-explained/national-test

Most businesses don’t get hacked because they’re unlucky.
They get hacked because they assumed everything was fine.

Customer data. Staff data. All suddenly at risk.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth…

Most business owners have no real visibility into:
– what’s actually being monitored
– how fast threats are detected
– whether backups would even work
– who’s watching things after hours

They trust their IT provider… but don’t know what to verify.

So let me ask you one simple question:

If something happened tonight at 2am… who is actually watching your systems?

Not “should be”…
Not “we think so”…
Actually watching.

If you can’t confidently answer that, you don’t have a tech problem.
You’ve got a risk problem.

We’ve put together a straight-talking checklist:

16 questions every business owner should ask their IT provider
(No fluff. No jargon. Just clarity.)

Download it here: https://neveco.com.au/16-essential-questions

If your current provider ticks every box great.

If not… at least now you know where you stand.

We recently onboarded a business that had been with the same IT provider for over 15 years.

The business owner wasn’t disengaged.
They knew what they were paying for.
They believed they were protected.

Within hours of getting access, we uncovered the reality.

No working backups.

Not degraded. Not intermittent.
No usable recovery point for close to 12 months.

Infrastructure issues had been silently breaking backups in the background and no one had picked it up. No one had fixed it.

But it didn’t stop there.

We also found what should never exist in a managed environment:

– Administrator passwords that were six characters long
– No complexity, no special characters
– Patterns as simple as three letters followed by “123”
– An excessive number of Domain Admin accounts

This is a cardinal sin for any Managed Service Provider.

The business was operating right on the edge.

One ransomware event.
One failed server.
One bad update.

That’s all it would have taken.

Not an inconvenience. Not downtime.
Closure.

This wasn’t a failure of the business owner.

This was a failure of the provider.

If you’re positioning yourself as a Managed Service Provider, this is the baseline:
– Backups must work
– They must be monitored
– They must be tested
– Administrator access must be tightly controlled
– Security must be enforced, not assumed

Anything less isn’t managed services. It’s risk with a monthly invoice.

We moved fast:
– Emergency cloud backup deployed
– Core infrastructure issues corrected
– Systems stabilised
– Environment brought back to a recoverable state
– Domain Admin access reduced and locked down
– All passwords rotated to strong, modern standards (20+ characters where supported)
– Previous provider access removed to eliminate ongoing risk

Within days, the business was no longer exposed.

Here’s the bigger issue.

Too many businesses choose an IT provider based on price per user.

But IT isn’t like buying a car where you can compare features on a spec sheet.

You can’t see:
– How your backups are really performing
– Whether your security is actually enforced
– If your environment is one incident away from failure

That’s why the right questions matter.

We’ve put together a simple resource:

If your provider can’t answer these clearly and confidently — you’ve already got your answer.

And honestly, our industry needs to lift.

There should be a higher standard and more accountability, because the gap between what’s promised and what’s delivered is still far too wide.

💭 What does a 2-day ransomware outage actually cost?

Let’s use a real-world example but completely made up.

Accounting firm
15 staff
12 billable professionals

Assumptions (conservative):

• $130 per hour
• 6 billable hours per day
• 2 full days offline

Lost Revenue:

12 × $130 × 6 = $9,360 per day
Over 2 days = $18,720

Wages still paid:

Daily wage base ≈ $4,600
Over 2 days = $9,200

Direct operational impact so far:

$18,720
• $9,200
= $27,920

Now add recovery labour.

Without a managed security plan in place, incident response isn’t included.

Let’s assume:

10 billable hours from an external IT provider
at $200 per hour (conservative for emergency response)

= $2,000 recovery cost

Total direct impact:

$29,920 in just 48 hours.

And that still excludes:

• Overtime to catch up
• Client frustration
• Potential data exposure
• Insurance excess
• Reputation damage

Now compare that to proactive protection:

Full managed services + cybersecurity
$150 × 15 staff = $2,250 per month
= $27,000 per year

Two bad days costs more than a full year of protection.

And here’s the difference:

With a structured managed plan:

• 24/7 monitoring
• Endpoint detection
• MFA enforcement
• Rapid containment
• Incident response included

The goal isn’t to “fix ransomware.”

It’s to prevent it or contain it before it shuts you down.

Downtime isn’t just inconvenient.
It’s a margin event.

If you’d like to see what this looks like for your business, we can run your numbers.

🏰 Who has the keys to the castle in your business?

Not the building.

Your systems.
Your email.
Your client records.
Your financial data.

In most modern businesses, your digital assets are worth far more than the stock on the floor.

So who’s protecting them?

• The owner, already flat out, trying to DIY to save a few dollars?
• The gamer who built a powerful PC and “knows computers”?
• The receptionist who’s great on Instagram and ended up as admin?

Good intentions aren’t a security strategy.

Cybersecurity today involves:

• Identity and access control
• MFA enforcement
• Endpoint Detection & Response
• 24/7 monitoring
• Backup validation
• Compliance frameworks
• Risk management

That’s not a side task.
That’s a specialist discipline.

If you wouldn’t rebuild your gearbox yourself, why risk your digital infrastructure?

And here’s the uncomfortable part.

Our industry has very little enforcement of standards.

Anyone can call themselves “IT.”

So when choosing an IT provider, ask the hard questions:

Are you cybersecurity certified?
What recognised standards do you align to?

How will you secure my business — specifically?

How long have you been operating?
Can you provide references from businesses similar to mine?

If the answer is vague…
“If we just take care of everything”…

That’s not strategy.
That’s sales.

Passionate, competent providers will talk confidently about controls, monitoring, frameworks, accountability and outcomes.

You don’t w**d out the weak by price.

You w**d them out with questions.

Your digital castle deserves more than a side hustle approach.

It deserves expertise.

They won’t target my business.”

That belief has cost businesses hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I once saw a business Walk in asking for help, almost lost $650,000 in a single transaction. We help secure the email and protect it moving forward.

A simple Compromised email account.
No MFA.
No 24/7 monitoring.
No detection.

The owner had no idea he was being monitored wait for the right time to strike.

The transfer went through.
The only reason the money wasn’t permanently lost was because the receiving bank flagged it as suspicious and called the sender.

It wasn’t a sophisticated breach.
It was an owners email account that wasn’t protected at all.

No Multi-Factor Authentication.
No conditional access.
No monitoring.

Just trust.

Now let’s run the maths.

If that $650,000 had been lost,
and the business operated at a 15% net profit margin…

They would need to generate:

$4.33 million in new sales
just to recover that loss.

Not grow.
Not expand.
Just get back to zero.

That’s what most people fail to calculate.

Cybercrime isn’t about Hollywood hackers.

It’s about simple weaknesses exploited at scale.

If you have money in the bank, process invoices, or rely on email — you are a target.

Cybersecurity foundations matter:

• MFA enforced properly
• Conditional Access
• 24/7 monitoring
• Endpoint protection
• User awareness

Insurance helps after the fact.
Controls stop the event from happening.

We help businesses build those foundations properly — so the money flowing into cybercrime doesn’t come from your revenue.

If you’re relying on “we’re too small,” you’re relying on hope.

Hope is not a strategy.
