✖️FAIL FRUITFULLY. FAIL FORWARD.✖️
Failing Fruitfully is all about cultivating creative courage and growth mindset. It is my take on the “Fail Fast. Fail Forward.” core principle in design thinking. It is a principle that can be applied to any meaningful project, design process or to life in general!
When you fail fruitfully, you treat what could be labelled a “failure” as a constructive stepping stone closer to the end result - a meaningful part of the journey.
We, as designers, understand that there is an iterative design process involving research, empathy-building, ideation, prototyping, development, testing and implementation that allows us to inch closer and closer to the final product, service or solution to the brief. If we were to over-identify with (or get caught up in perfecting) every idea or iteration, we could become risk-averse emotional wrecks and curtail the process!
By cultivating growth mindset and “failing forward” we…
▪️expand our thinking,
▪️diverge our ideas,
▪️play,
▪️create space,
▪️build confidence,
▪️gather quick feedback to iterate towards better solutions,
▪️foster resilience,
▪️build a culture where mistakes are opportunities for growth, not reasons to stop, and
▪️celebrate ideas for the free flowing inspiration that they are, and as steps towards the concept that we finally move forward with.
And by testing ideas using low risk scenarios and rapid low fidelity prototypes, we can discover what does and doesn’t work faster.
If we stay light in our attachment, we move faster and see the bigger picture. We shift the focus from perfection to progress, and ultimately achieve breakthroughs that innovate, improve people’s lives and serve real human needs.
