We’d like to share a quick update.

After careful consideration, activity on this page will be winding down as the company moves into a new phase. We appreciate the support and connections built here over the years.

Jason is now pursuing a new and independent venture — still focused on practical outcomes and doing things properly. If you’d like to stay across those activities, you’re welcome to follow here: https://www.facebook.com/fireforge.au

This page will remain available for general information during the transition. For anything relating to past work or existing matters, please continue using the usual contact channels.

As always, take a moment to review your systems and stay on top of the basics. Thanks again for your support.

So this is a simple, unsophisticated scam that obviously works. An email purportedly from the boss to accounts to pay an invoice for a totally incorrect email address.

I suspect our email system removed an attachment, which makes it less of a problem. However, the question is, would your staff be able to spot the warning signs of this type of scam?

Would your systems strip malicious content?

Looking at footage from the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, it's easy to see that not everyone knows how to effectively evaluate risks and make sensible choices.

As Cyclone Alfred approaches Brisbane, we hope everyone makes sensible choices and, most importantly, stays safe.

Good Luck, southeast Queensland.

Be on the lookout for fake CAPTCHA pages! ⚠️👇

CAPTCHAs are used to differentiate humans from computers and bots online. Some websites may direct you to a CAPTCHA page to prove you are ‘not a robot’ by clicking on specific images, such as photos with traffic lights.

More cybercriminals are using fake CAPTCHAs to steal information and gain access to devices. Some are asking users to copy and paste malicious code, tricking them into downloading malware.

Copying and pasting text into a device’s clipboard or operating system is not a normal CAPTCHA process. If you see a prompt to do this, treat it as malicious.

Remain vigilant to reduce the risk of becoming a victim:
🚫 avoid copying or downloading text from CAPTCHA pages
⚙️ keep your devices up to date
🌐 only use trusted websites.

One of the easiest ways for people to “hack” a system is to socially engineer their way into obtaining a password from a user. It's a bit harder to use now with MFA, but far from impossible.

A good point to remember is that most users aren't concerned about security because they usually don't care until it's too late.

Sitting around checking my email and thinking why do I need to action this. It looks legit on the surface, but it's a good example of what to look at to make sure you don't get scammed. Oh, and by the way, everyone can get scammed if you're not careful.

Pay particular attention to the Click Request link. I've pulled the link out and modified it so it's not dangerous. Again, it's not right and not from the Commonwealth Bank.

Can't get anything done this afternoon? It's a global outage, most likely due to a Crowdstrike problem, causing BSOD everywhere (Blue Screen of Death, affecting Windows systems.) If you've never heard of them, Crowdstrike are a major cybersecurity provider (and I guarantee everyone will know their name by tomorrow 😬) At this point, it appears to be a problematic update, rather than hacking/security attack.

It might be a good day to take the afternoon off, and go for a walk outside. .... 🌳☀️ ... unless of course, you work in IT 😩🫣 Sending positive vibes, guys, it's going to be a very long night ...

Welp, it's my turn, I very nearly paid a scammer. There was a very shiny, good quality set of wheels on Facebook, almost brand new and just the right size and specs, exactly what I've been looking for, for months. Really good price too, go figure 🤷🏼‍♀️ It was late, I was tired, and I didn't realise until it was nearly too late. In hindsight, of course, there were quite a few red flags, including some odd turns of phrase, the insistence on pushing the transaction into bank transfers. Luckily I got wise in time, and was able to call my bank and reverse the transaction before it was processed, although I did have to sit through the lecture first from the bank on how to avoid being scammed, a lecture I've given to other people a hundred times or more.

I'm not going to repeat the lecture here. There are so many Australians being scammed every day, social media is now full of good advice on how to avoid scams. It's the very unfortunate reality that it's probably going to happen to you at some point, so my advice is very simple - be kind to yourself when it happens, and don't EVER transfer more money than you're willing to lose, to someone you've never met in person.
