You may have heard in the news that Australia will be introducing a new tax on income earned by Backpackers. This will start at a rate of 15%. Whilst we are still waiting on final implementation details from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), the Kinphar Tax Calculator (see www.kinphar.com.au) will be updated for the new rate when it becomes applicable on 1st January 2017. To be charged tax at the 15% rate, the backpacker's employer must register as an employer with the ATO otherwise they are required to tax at a rate of 32.50%. If you have already been employed before 1st January 2017, you employer(s) will issue you with one Payment Summary detailing your income earned between 1st July and 31st December 2016 and a different payment summary for the remainder of the financial year.

The Kinphar Tax Calculator App (Australian Salary based Tax Calculation).

It has been designed as a simple tool to allow someone to see quickly how much tax they will have taken from their pay. It also calculates HELP and SFSS deductions and is for the Australian market. It is initially available for Android mobile phones with an iPhone version to follow soon.

The app allows for the entry of a pay amount as a weekly, fortnightly, monthly or yearly amount. You can quickly swap between pay frequencies and the app will recalculate for the new frequency. You can even look at the tax amount for the previous two financial years.

When you have completed your calculation, if you wish then you can send the result by SMS, email etc to yourself or anyone else.

The app is available for free. It may also be extended to cover new legislations as they get introduced and passed.

You can download the Android version of the App from Google Play Store - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=au.com.kinphar.mobile.taxcalculator

and iOS version via https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/kinphar-tax-calculator/id1163148826
