Redgum Technologies

Redgum Technologies If you feel software developers speak in code, youโ€™re not alone. Ironically, many software developers feel clients also speak in code.

This disconnect creates mistrust and mistakes. Redgum has developed a software development environment Software development is all about people and communication. Software projects succeed or fail based on the people involved and their ability to communicate. Good software developers will actively listen to what you need. Great software developers will use their unique knowledge and experience to

exceed your expectations. Exceptional developers will go even further and help you redefine the parameters, with the aim of delivering even greater returns on investment. Redgums mission is always to strive for the exceptional.

Ten days.

One role.
One workflow.
One measurable result.

That is a succession pilot anyone can run without stopping the business.

Myth: tech is the bottleneck.
Reality: your organisation's capacity to change is.

Most stalled programmes are not waiting on code.
They are waiting for people to absorb what has already shipped.

Projects pile up.
Adoption stalls.
Teams quietly return to the old way.

And the platform you just bought sits at 40% utilisation.

Change capacity is finite.
It does not expand because the scope demands it.
It does not care about the project plan.

Every team has a limit to how much new behaviour it can take on in a quarter.
Exceed it, and you get resistance, not progress.
Respect it, and you get adoption, not just delivery.

The fix is not a better Gantt chart.
It is a leadership decision to treat change capacity like a budget.

Sequence your work against what your people can actually absorb.
Ship small.
Release in stages that leave room for belief to grow between them.

Slow scope is not a weakness.
It is the only way big change gets finished.

Inside a discovery session: who attends, what happens, what gets decided.

Most teams have never seen one run well.

Here is what it actually looks like.

Software development teams rebuild between 15% and 30% of what they build if they skip the discovery stage.

It's a familiar pattern visible in every project without clear first principles.

Adoption failure is quiet. The system goes live. Usage is low. Nobody asks why.

The feature list gets extended in the hope that more features fix what clarity would have fixed in the first session.

Rebuild triggers are expensive.
Not just in code hours.
In the belief that change is worth attempting.
Every failed rollout makes the next one harder to fund and harder to sell internally.

The metric was never agreed. If there is no number that the team aligned on before build, there is no way to call it a success, and no way to stop adding scope.

A proper discovery stage changes all that. A proper session to agree the real problem, name the metric, and define the smallest test prevents most of what ends up on the rework list.

The slower start is the faster finish.

Q: Discovery slows us down.
A: Rework is slower.

That is not a clever reframe.

It is a pattern we see on every project where this conversation happens.

The teams that push back hardest on discovery are usually the ones who have already been through a rebuild they cannot admit was avoidable.

Here is what actually slows you down:

โ†’ Agreeing on a metric after the build is done
โ†’ Discovering user resistance at go-live
โ†’ Finding the integration that breaks everything in Week 3
โ†’ Rebuilding 40% of what you shipped in Month 1

Discovery does not add time.
It moves the hard conversations from the end of the project to the start.
Where they are cheap.
The objection is not really about speed.
It is about discomfort with uncertainty.

Running a short discovery pass forces you to sit in the ambiguity for a day before you commit.

That is uncomfortable.
But it is the only way to commit to the right thing.

How to run a 45-minute discovery that prevents 6 weeks of rework.

Most teams skip this step.

Most teams also rebuild.

Here is the process we use โ€” six steps, one afternoon, real clarity.

A five-minute whiteboard saved six months of rebuild.

โžก๏ธ The project had already been scoped.
โžก๏ธ Resources allocated.
โžก๏ธ A dev team briefed.

Then someone drew the actual workflow on a whiteboard.
โŒNot the intended one.
โœ… The real one.

Three departments were doing the same data entry manually.
Two of them were correcting each other's errors before passing the job on.
None of that made it into the original brief.

We stopped the project that day.

Not because there was no value in what was planned.

Because there was far more value in solving a different problem first โ€” one nobody had named yet.
The proof-of-value we shipped four weeks later saved the operations team 12 hours a week.
That number came from the whiteboard session.

It did not exist before it.

Discovery is not about designing a better solution.

โžก๏ธ It is about finding the right problem to solve.
โžก๏ธ And sometimes, it happens in five minutes.

With a marker.
On a whiteboard.

Reply 'story' and I will send the quick outline we use to tell discovery wins to boards.

Discovery is not a delay.

It is the blueprint meeting you skip at your own cost.

Most builds fail not because of bad code - but because no one mapped reality before writing a single line.

Do you think that project discovery is an overhead?

WRONG!

Discovery is the cheapest insurance you can buy.

Teams who treat project discovery as a delay are confusing motion with progress. You are not slow because you paused to map reality. But you will be slow when you spend months re-factoring the wrong build.

If people cannot describe the current workflow on a whiteboard, they cannot brief it to a developer. That is not a communication problem. That is a discovery problem.

A short pass through the real work - mapping handoffs, naming the friction, picking one measurable win - changes what you build.

Not theoretically.
In practice.
Every time.

Comment 'DISCOVERY', and I will send the 7 discovery prompts we use to flesh out our SaaS systems.
