Recently, Troy helped facilitate ARTLANDS 2026, a conference bringing together regional arts practitioners from across the nation.

Held on Kabi Kabi Country, ARTLANDS 2026 explored the theme 'Water Connects Everything', asking: What can creativity reveal about the systems shaping regional Australia's future?

Troy hosted a number of conversations and participated in panel discussions exploring the role of the arts in bringing people together and strengthening connections.

We had the pleasure of hearing from some amazing speakers, and in line with the theme, it was great to make new connections, strengthen our networks and ensure we continue creating impact for artists and community.

Blaklash FORUM up close.

On Thursday 8 October, we welcomed friends and peers to our West End studio for Creating Impact for First Nations Communities, the latest in our FORUM series.

Our Managing Director, Troy Casey, joined Jordan Eaton from Lendlease, Melanie Grills from Arup and Norman Laing from EY Australia to discuss how some of Australia's biggest organisations can create meaningful outcomes for First Nations communities.

To everyone who came along and made the event what it was, thank you. We can't wait for the next one, and there'll be more to come on that soon.

For now, enjoy this recap from an incredible night!

How do you translate stories of Country into a graphic language that can live throughout a workplace?

For the QUT (Queensland University of Technology) X Block refurbishment, Yuggera artist Ailsa Walsh (Wulkuraka Designs) created three custom artworks that respond to the project's cultural narratives.

Together, the works carry those stories throughout the workplace, embedding cultural meaning into the everyday experience of the space.

“Creating impact for First Nations communities is about changing what happens in organisations, reconsidering decisions made, unpacking who participates and who benefits.” – Melanie Grills

Last night, we brought together architects, designers, artists and industry leaders for our latest Blaklash FORUM, Creating Impact for First Nations Communities.

Together, we explored what it takes to move beyond good intentions and create meaningful outcomes with and for First Nations communities, from challenging established systems to rethinking how we measure impact.

A huge thank you to our panellists, Jordan Eaton from Lendlease, Melanie Grills from Arup and Norman Laing from EY Australia, for sharing their experiences and perspectives so generously.

The conversation highlighted the importance of trust, cultural integrity and genuine collaboration, as well as the responsibility we all share to consider the broader impact of our work.

As Jordan Eaton shared, “Impact can go both ways, and we have to be conscious about Country – what can be revealed, and what can be protected?”

Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to the discussion. We're grateful for the opportunity to keep learning from one another, strengthening relationships and exploring how we can create lasting change together.

FORUM was created to centre the voices of First Peoples.

Over the years, we've had the privilege of hearing from some incredible Traditional Custodians and First Nations architects, designers and artists.

Each FORUM has brought new perspectives to the conversation, exploring architecture, cultural identity, public art, sustainable practice and the role design and engagement can play in creating meaningful outcomes for community and Country.

Swipe through for a look back at some of the speakers who've joined us so far.

Next up, we're bringing together Jordan Eaton from Lendlease, Melanie Grills from Arup and Norman Laing from EY Australia for Creating Impact for First Nations Communities.

Every piece in our debut furniture collection, Deep Time, begins with a story.

The collection brings cultural knowledge, traditional tools, materials and ways of making into contemporary furniture.

Designed by Blaklash Associate Director Erin McDonald, each table, chair and stool carries its own meaning, from the gathering places that inspired the Kin dining table to the scar trees and coolamon forms reflected across the Echo range.

If you've heard of Blaklash, you're probably no stranger to our Managing Director, Troy Casey.

Troy’s role spans strategy, business development, stakeholder engagement and the day-to-day running of Blaklash, but his connection to the work is rooted in the impact it can create for community.

“Working with community to facilitate positive social change is what gets me up in the morning,” he says. “The part that fills my cup up the most is being on Country with community and understanding how we can translate their aspirations into project outcomes.”

Troy’s background in journalism might seem an unexpected path into design, but storytelling has remained a constant throughout his career. From visual arts to the built environment, he’s focused on creating more opportunities for people to connect with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories in their everyday lives.

That emphasis on connection carries through to the advice he gives anyone wanting to work in this space.

“Focus on creating really genuine and meaningful relationships,” he says. “Whether it’s with the client, community or collaborators, the strength of the outcome really only exists in the strength of the relationship you build.”

Recently, Amanda, Troy and Owen travelled to Mparntwe (Alice Springs) for Desert Mob, one of Australia’s longest-running Aboriginal art festivals.

A major fixture on the national arts calendar, Desert Mob brings together hundreds of artists and more than 30 Aboriginal art centres from across the NT, SA and WA, sharing the depth and diversity of desert art, culture and storytelling.

Beyond the festival, the team also had the chance to spend some time on Arrernte Country, taking in the landscape and making the most of Owen’s first visit to Mparntwe.

A pretty special few days, all round.

Supporting community to have agency over Country is why Blaklash exists.

Over the last few months, we have had the privilege to support Jarowair Traditional Custodians in developing a masterplan for Gummingurru, a cultural site 2000 years older than the Pyramid of Giza that connects many communities across the region through initiation, Dreaming, creation, and the Bunya Festival.

During our most recent visit, Troy, Shayne, Owen, and our good friend Damian Thompson from LatStudios came together with Jarowair people to unpack cultural aspirations for the site and develop a vision for a place of culture and connection into the future.

We are incredibly grateful to contribute to such an important and special project, as well as for the ongoing generosity of Jarowair Traditional Custodians.

Thank you for welcoming us and sharing so much knowledge in shaping a contemporary vision of what this place has always been.
