Anna Hartley embarked on her creative journey at Griffith College of Art in Brisbane, where she proudly earned her Bachelor of Photography degree in 2012, with a specialization in photojournalism. This academic pursuit not only fulfilled her love of learning and crea

tivity, but also kindled her passion for visual storytelling. Since those formative years, Anna's career has evolved through diverse experiences in Photography, Business, and Marketing. In 2019, she took a significant step forward by enrolling in Graphic Design studies at Billy Blue College of Art in Brisbane, enriching her creative skills further. These days, Anna's time is spent between her role as Graphic Designer at The Branding Business, where she works with corporate companies to produce outstanding branding and merchandise pieces, and her own business, where her focus is on brand story telling through a blend of Graphic Design and Photography. Still Trying to appeal to everyone?...yawn

I think this is one of the hardest things to learn when launching a business. You don't actually want to appeal to everyone. Defining your audience will help you to define your brand look, messaging and just make the whole process way easier. This is something I include in every brand package. It's a non-negotiable.

The right branding doesn't just attract customers.
It attracts the right customers.

These words were spoken over 20 years ago but they've never been more relevent. With AI churning out flat, lifeless copy and creative, the human element is what we're now seeking out. Premium brands dont just look good, they connect to their audience through tone, texture, sound and atmosphere.

Probably thinking about branding. Or coffee. Maybe both. ā˜•ļø

At this point, coffee has become less of a drink and more of a personality trait.

I unapologetically will:
travel an extra ten minutes to "the good coffee shop",
judge a cafĆ© slightly by its branding before I’ve even ordered,
and absolutely notice when the cups, menu, interiors, playlist, and social media all feel intentional.

It’s the feeling of walking into a space and instantly wanting to stay longer than you planned.

Which is probably why I’d LOVE to work more with cafĆ©s, roasteries, hospitality venues, and coffee brands moving forward.

The coffee industry is full of personality and experience-driven brands, and that’s exactly the kind of creative work I’m drawn to most.

So if you’re a cafĆ© owner, roastery, hospitality brand, or know someone building something cool in this space… hi šŸ‘‹ I’m ready whenever you are.

If you’re overthinking every post… this is probably why šŸ‘€

As a brand designer, I run into this all the time.

I love creating.
I love making something new and different.

But doing that every single time you post?
It’s time consuming… and honestly, confusing as hell for you.

Because if everything looks different,
nothing feels recognisable.

So here’s what I focus on instead:

I show up consistently,
while still bringing in a bit of personality.

Maybe it’s an unexpected design detail,
a slightly different take in the caption,
or the occasional curveball.

But underneath it all?
Same content themes.
Same core design style.

Less confusing for you.
Less work for me.

It’s a no brainer.

1. Get clear on your message
Say what you do, who it’s for, and why it matters. Simply.

2. Lock in your brand style
Pick your colours, fonts, and overall feel — and stick to it.

3. Create a few go-to content themes
So you’re not reinventing the wheel every time.

You don’t need to come up with something new every time.
You just need something that makes sense. šŸ’„

Normal to me looked like a 9–5.
Say yes to the boss.
Tick the boxes.
Wear the outfit.
Smile and nod.

It was comfortable… but it never felt like me.

I wanted more.
More creativity.
More freedom.
More challenge.
I wanted work to actually work for me.

So I stepped off the path and started aha Creative.

And honestly?
There have been plenty of days where I’ve thought…
ā€œit would be easier to just go back.ā€

Back to predictable.
Back to safe.

But then I remember this:

ā€œNormality is a paved road. It’s comfortable to walk, but no flowers grow on it.ā€

Because the growth, the colour, the excitement… doesn’t happen on the safe path.

It happens when you step off it.

Was it uncomfortable? Yes.
Was it uncertain? Also yes.
But was it worth it? 100%.

The challenge was making it clear, digestible, and appealing to the right audience.

And not just any audience…
one willing to invest $6K in their health.

This is where DIY marketing falls down.

It’s not just about how it looks -
it’s about how it’s understood.

Clear. Trustworthy. Intentional.

That’s what builds connection (and conversions).

You have to invest in your marketing if you want it to work.

This is the frustrating part of designing a beautiful logo on its own and sending it off into the world.

The logo isn't bad, but by itself, it's forgettable.

If there’s no clear personality, no consistency, no strong direction in the way its used,
people don’t register it. They scroll past, or choose someone else or worse forget you were even an option.

And over time, that looks like:
– lower quality enquiries
– being priced against cheaper competitors
– feeling like you have to prove yourself more

šŸ’” Ready to change that? Here are 3 simple fixes you can start right now:

1. Get painfully clear on what you do
If people have to figure it out, they won’t.
Make it obvious in one sentence.

2. Make your brand recognisable
Use the same colours, fonts, and style every time.
Familiarity builds trust.

3. Show more personality
The right people are drawn to brands that feel like something. Share what makes you unique

You don’t need to be louder.
You need to be clearer and more consistent.

You might remember seeing some of this project a while ago... it took a little hiatus part way through, but I am happy to to share the finished product with you.

Here, I worked with the Communicable Diseases Branch (Qld Gov) to bring some fun (and clarity) to public health communication through engaging graphics for their E-learning platform. šŸ©ŗšŸ’”

It was a joy to take on such a meaningful project and make learning about health more engaging and digestible—because important info doesn’t have to be boring!
