You're looking at part of the analog component ready to be married to its digital counterpart and chassis for the next round-the-world journey.

In any elite sport, a 1% advantage would see equipment ruled out and banned outright, such as F1 and International Smallbore to name but couple, where even the thickness of coats and trousers is scrutinised to the millimetre; that 1% is the difference between winning and competing.

The greatest single impact on precision at any range is projectile conformity and concentricity, which affects the extreme spread of the ballistic coefficient of projectiles, notably, at longer ranges on tight targets such as 700 and 1000 yards, both sub moa targets, where precision and accuracy are critical.

By spinning, you can effectively reduce your extreme spread in ballistic coefficient by 2 to 4%, given the batch of projectiles measured, giving you higher precision, reducing fliers, and allowing you to move confidently on the fall of each round, vastly improving your accuracy.

As little as a 1% gain will give you 3-5 points in a 500-point match.

So, whoever is spinning has that edge and cannot be ruled out.

Can you spot the difference?

Two premium-grade projectiles, same box, same length, same weight, but not the same ballistic shape, each at either end of the BC bell curve,

5% extreme spread in BC, when fired, each will print on the line of the 6-ring, one at 12 o'clock and the other at 6 o'clock; with a perfect shot based on the mean centre of your group and the batch average, then vector in any wind and hold capacity of the shooter and rifle.

Sitting in plain sight and ignoring the obvious!!

To find a projectile's true Ballistic Coefficient (BC), each shot must be tracked with a Doppler radar (financially restrictive to most). Another way is to use a calibrated chronograph at either end of your flight path, or one chronograph and an electronic target that registers speed, a quality unit with a low error specification for data to be useful.

This will tell you the true Ballistic Coefficient (BC) of a batch of projectiles by measuring the speed loss from the muzzle to the target.

The closer each projectile is to the next in a string in ballistic shape, the more a rig will perform to its utmost precision.

Those errant high and low shots outside groups, when all else is the same, add lateral if the wind is up. These shots are just the projectile doing what it's meant to do based on physics. They have a different BC and, accordingly, a different drag profile. These are found on either edge of the bell curve for that production run.

Projectiles with a similar BC will group at the aim point. Higher BC projectiles shoot higher and upwind. Lower BC projectiles shoot lower and downwind.

Additional induced drag from longitudinal misalignment, throw due to jacket inconsistency, and defects account for the departure from a rifle's precision, expanding groups, and introduce anomalies, making it difficult to call shots precisely and leading to incorrect adjustments to group mean centre refinement for maximum accuracy.

To achieve anywhere near the same fidelity as the Model-24, measuring each individual projectile at numerous points would be needed and, ultimately, would not yield the same result, as there are some items that the Model-24 can only measure, built into its design.

When it comes to aerodynamics, you don’t look at the front end; the critical component is the back end.

Ever wonder where those high and low shots appear? What are you doing to check conformity?

Side note: they just don’t go high and low; lateral movement is dependent on BC number and wind speed and vector.

Wonder why your group zero changes mid-shoot, or where that errant shot came from?

When you spin projectiles, you begin an interesting journey; each lot tells its own story, its DNA, whether the dies were new, and the needle hardly changed. Often lulled into a sense of relief, and expecting the rest to be the same, often stopping there, they are the best that can be found today, you say.

And a surprise lies in a few more, or a new lot spun, where worn and tired dies are at the end of their run, in mid-production when components are changed from one lot to another, within tolerance and spec, cups being the same, but not the same, at a different point, the needle will sit, or doing its dance, another spot it I will hit!!

Most premium lots of projectiles have a BC extreme spread of anywhere between 3-6%, dependent on brand, measuring for length, weight and pointing only catches circa 1-2%

Precision, the answer is in plain sight, with an edge that cannot be seen.

Innovation and consistency is what keeps the top 5% ahead of the game.

Rarely are you playing on a level field; those at the top predominantly have access to technology, like advanced engines, suspension**, actions, barrels, or ammunition, which give a technical edge, making them faster or more precise and consistently putting them two seasons ahead of the game while others play catch up.

When Accuracy International introduced the “Green Meanie” (built by two guys in a garden shed) and won a major British Defence Department tender for a new sniper rifle to replace the Parker Hale M85, the department had to raise the sniper qualification standard in response to increased pass rates.

When you look at both rifles, the Parker Hale M85 in 308 Win and the Accuracy International L96A1 also in 308 Win, they are not too dissimilar from a design that had worked for decades, the subtle innovations in the L96A1 design within the action, chassis and Australian-made barrel were the edge to build a much higher precision and rugged rifle.

As in racing, it takes innovation, usually sitting in plain sight, to achieve handling and stability to improve performance, as in rifle precision.

But unlike innovations that require modifications or additions to high-performance machinery, which, once they become known, are ruled out until the field can catch up, spinning projectiles give a clear edge and can only be excluded by issuing factory rounds.
