Anthropic (the team behind the AI a lot of us already use every day, Claude) has just signed a $31.9 billion deal to build Australia's largest data centre: the Western Downs Digital Park, about 37km from Dalby, Queensland.

Singapore-based developer Zerra DC is building it, with total planned capacity of 2.16 gigawatts, on par with some of the biggest data centres operating anywhere in the world. First stages are expected online as early as 2027.

The bits worth knowing:
👉 This is for inference, not training. In plain terms, it's built to run the AI and answer people's questions, not to teach the model in the first place. That's a sign real usage, not just hype, is driving the investment.
👉 It'll connect directly to the existing Braemar power station, with an on-site battery-powered conditioning system for power quality and stability, plus room for new renewable power purchase agreements. It's also using a closed-loop, air-cooled system that keeps clean water use down.
👉 Queensland Premier David Crisafulli called it a "major win," pointing to new jobs, more energy into the grid, and lower power prices. Separately, the federal government is promising new restrictions on data centre land, water and power use from 2027, in response to community pushback.
👉 It's the latest AI heavyweight to plant a flag in Australia, following OpenAI's Sydney data centre deal last year. Economists reckon the wider investment boom firms like these are part of could hit $150 billion by 2030.

Whatever side of the debate you're on, this is a clear marker: global AI labs are treating Australia as long-term infrastructure, not just a customer market.
