It's been over 2 years since 15-year-old Noongar Yamatji boy Cassius Turvey died in 2022.

Cassius was walking home from school when he was attacked on the street in Middle Swan with his friends.

Today is a special day, as Cassius' favorite day of the year was Halloween.

The memorial plaque below was was unveiled in Halloween last year, where the Turvey family encouraged those who attended to dress in their best Halloween costumes in his memory.

Cassius' story needs to be known and remembered by everyone.

This is why needs to change, this is why we do what we do at weavr.

Such a great time yesterday celebrating Indigenous Business Month & weavr's Yalawanyi with some deadly indigenous leaders and organisations leading reconciliation!

Yalawanyi 🌞 meaning a place to gather in Gathang language spoken by Biripi people, the people of one of our co-founders, Kieran.

It represents a movement towards building stronger, more meaningful connections between the thousands of custodians of reconciliation working in organisations across the land.

It was a deadly morning of:

- Learning about indigenous business directly from their leaders.
- Discussing changes and what reconciliation looks like as we enter 2025.
- Group sessions on important challenges and opportunities we all currently face.
- Hilarious Torres Strait Islander & mob trivia with Josh.
- Tradition Torres Strait Islander weaving.
- Plenty of yarns, dancing and good food!

Thanks to all the deadly people and organisations who made it possible.

Reconciliation is all about people and sharing culture - so we look forward to our next Yalawanyi in Feb 2025 in Melbourne and Sydney.

🔸The Great Australian Silence 2.0 - In 1968, anthropologist W.E.H. Stanner talked in his Boyer lecture After the Dreaming about the “cult of forgetfulness” practiced on a national scale in Australia, which he termed “the Great Australian Silence” - where Australians do not just fail to acknowledge the atrocities of the past, but choose to not think about them at all, to the point of forgetting that these events ever happened.

The fragile reality that Indigenous Affairs has forever been teetering on becoming completely assimilated only took a major step closer because of the Voice vote.

❌Both sides failed and, as a result, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities, and real Culture, are now spiralling towards complete disappearance because of the new Great Australian Silence🤫

As we approach tomorrow, lets reflect on the ongoing challenges faced by First Nations people, whose lived experiences and identities have been continuously discussed, exploited, and targeted across numerous public platforms.

The weavr mob knows that the months leading up to the referendum has been exceptionally hard for our communities.

We urge mob to take a step back from the constant noise of discussions and debates. And take the time to reconnect with yourselves. Reach out to community and nourish your spirit.

Reconciliation isn't just morning teas and Acknowledging Country.

💭 It's about reflecting on the historic and ongoing injustices faced by First Nations communities.

✨ It's about celebrating Indigenous Elders, knowledge, languages, art and music.

✊🏾It's about Acknowledging sovereignty was never ceded.

☕It's about community, connections, culture and lots of cuppas.

It's all that and more!

What does reconciliation mean to you?

On average women in Australia earn 87 cents for every $1 men earn. While there is progress in reducing this gap, the discussions fail to consider an intersectional approach.

The exclusion of overlapping intersecting identities such as race, immigration status, disability, LGBTQIA+ identities and other factors end up leaving out the experiences of many women, especially First Nations women.

This equal pay day Workplace Gender Equality Agency is calling on employers to reduce their pay gap and take into account that what’s missing matters.

Take action by sharing awareness around this issue, advocating for equal pay and recognising that the gender pay gap is not a women’s problem, it’s a societal problem.

The First Nations majority led non profit works with communities to protect and grow languages, stories and cultural heritage.
