Ecowatt Energy is a Brisbane based, vertically integrated LiFePO4 battery manufacturer. We design and build 12V, 24V and 48V lithium batteries and off-grid energy storage products, supplying consumers, trade partners, OEMs, private businesses and government departments across Australia.

We are looking for an experienced BDM to grow our trade, wholesale and OEM channels across the 12V, off-grid and energy storage sectors.

We also tested one of the popular budget 600Ah lithium batteries on the market. Charge current: 300A. For a 600Ah battery, that is only 0.5C. Half its capacity rating. Any quality LiFePO4 battery should handle that comfortably, all day, without breaking a sweat.

This one could not.

It accepted just 423Ah before internal temperatures climbed too high and overtemp protection shut the charge down. It never completed a full charge at 300A. At half its rated capacity in current, it overheated before it was full.

Why does this happen?

The same story we keep seeing in cheaper batteries. Heat is the giveaway. Lower grade cells with high internal resistance turn charge current into heat instead of stored energy. Generic BMS MOSFET temperatures climb fast under sustained current when the board is not built for it. Likely undersized internal cabling and busbars adding even more resistance, and more heat, to the path. Every one of those is a place where corners get cut to hit a lower price. The thermal protection is doing its job. The problem is the hardware underneath it generating all that heat in the first place.

The capacity on the label means nothing if the battery overheats before it can take charge and deliver it at its rated currents.

One of our customers sent through photos of their 79 Series setup, and it's a great example of how the slimline format works in a vehicle where space is tight.

The ESSPRO300 sits neatly behind the seat. It's a 12.8V 300Ah LiFePO4 battery, 3,840Wh in total, in a slimline case designed for exactly this kind of position where a standard battery box won't fit.

The charging side is a Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30 DC-DC charger and a SmartSolar MPPT 100/50 mounted alongside, so the battery charges from the alternator while driving and from solar when parked. Keeping the whole system in one spot behind the seat.

Inside the case are A-grade EVE LiFePO4 cells and a JBD Smart BMS with Bluetooth, so battery status, current draw and cell voltages can all be checked from a phone.

A tidy install and a good reference for anyone planning power for a 79 Series or similar cab-constrained build.

We recently bench tested one of the popular budget 314Ah lithium batteries on the market. The spec sheet looked impressive. The test results did not.

Discharged at its rated maximum output, it delivered barely 75Ah before overtemp protection shut it down. That is less than a quarter of its claimed capacity.

We then tried to recharge it at 200A. Same story. It accepted just 120Ah before cutting out again (in sub 20 celcius ambient as well).

So what is actually going on inside?

Heat. Under real load, the BMS MOSFET temperature shoots up fast. That points to undersized components that cannot carry the current they are rated for. Likely undersized internal cabling and busbars. Lower grade cells with higher internal resistance, generating excessive heat every time you push them. The thermal protection is doing its job. The problem is the hardware underneath it forcing the shutdown in the first place.

These are exactly the places a cheaper battery cuts corners. You cannot see any of it from the outside. You only find it under real load, when you need the power most.
