Having a backup and being able to recover from it are not always the same thing.

Business leaders should understand:

• what information is backed up
• how frequently backups occur
• where backups are stored
• who can access or alter them
• how recovery is tested
• which systems would be restored first

Testing is important because it helps confirm whether recovery arrangements work as expected before they are urgently needed.

Backups form one part of a broader resilience approach. People, priorities, communications and recovery responsibilities also need to be understood.

The most valuable question is not simply, "Do we have backups?"

It is, "Are we confident we can recover?"

Access to information should be appropriate to the work a person needs to perform.

Over time, employees may change roles, join new projects or stop using particular systems. If access is not reviewed, permissions can accumulate and create unnecessary exposure.

Business leaders should encourage regular review of:
• who can access important information
• whether that access is still required
• privileged or administrative accounts
• shared accounts
• former employee access
• third-party and supplier permissions

Access management is not about making work difficult. It is about helping people access what they need while protecting information they do not.

Clear ownership and regular reviews can make this process easier to manage.

Not every system presents the same level of business risk.

A useful starting point is to identify the information, applications and services your organisation cannot operate without.

Consider:
• customer and employee information
• financial systems
• core operational platforms
• communication tools
• intellectual property
• backups and recovery systems
• critical supplier connections

Once these assets are understood, security decisions can be prioritised around business impact.

This moves the conversation away from protecting everything equally and towards protecting what matters most.

Good cyber security begins with business context, clear priorities and practical action.

Do you know which systems your organisation would need first following a disruption?

Would your employees know how to report a suspicious email, lost device or possible information exposure?

Would they feel comfortable doing so?

Early reporting gives security teams and technology partners a better opportunity to investigate and respond. Confusing processes, uncertainty or fear of blame can cause valuable time to be lost.

Every employee should know:
1. what should be reported
2. how to report it
3. who will respond
4. what happens next

The process should be simple, visible and supportive.

People should never feel that they need to investigate a security concern on their own. Clear access to experienced support helps protect employees and the wider organisation.

A policy explains what people should do.
Culture influences what they actually do.

A healthy security culture exists when employees:
• understand why security matters
• know where to find guidance
• feel comfortable reporting concerns
• receive practical and regular education
• see leaders following the same expectations
• know that assistance is available

A written policy remains important, but it should be supported by clear communication, useful tools and trusted people.

The most effective organisations make safe behaviour part of everyday work, rather than something discussed once a year.

What does security feel like inside your organisation: a shared responsibility or a compliance exercise?

Cybercriminals often rely on urgency.

A message may ask you to approve a payment, reset a password, open a document or provide sensitive information immediately.

Before responding:

• pause and consider whether the request is expected
• check the sender carefully
• confirm unusual requests through another trusted channel
• avoid opening unexpected links or attachments
• report suspicious activity promptly

Slowing down for a moment can prevent a much larger problem.

Business leaders can support this behaviour by making it acceptable for employees to question unusual requests, even when they appear to come from someone senior.

Good security is not about acting quickly. It is about acting carefully.

Technology is essential to cyber security, but technology alone is not enough.

Employees make security decisions every day. They handle information, approve requests, use applications, share documents and respond to messages.

The goal should not be to make people afraid of making mistakes. It should be to give them the knowledge, tools and support to make safer decisions.

Effective security education is:
✔ easy to understand
✔ relevant to each person's role
✔ reinforced regularly
✔ supported by clear processes
✔ backed by accessible expert help

When people feel confident asking questions or reporting something unusual, issues can be addressed earlier.

A strong security culture combines capable technology with informed people and responsive support.
