Paula was the admin for several online accounts at her work. She used the password “Admin1” and thought it would be secure since it had upper and lowercase letters, as well as a number.

When the IT department told Paula that someone had hacked their database and stolen customer data, she found out just how secure it was. Paula's password was the one the hacker used. This cost the company thousands in lost sales and customers.

Things like “123456”, “qwerty” and “password” are some of the most common passwords in use. However, these are easily cracked by hackers. Instead, passphrases that contain four or more random words are far more secure.

Verity received an email about an order that she hadn’t placed. She thought this was odd so checked her bank account and noticed that she had charges on her account that she had not authorised. She suspected a hacker had found out her bank details, email, and password when she last bought something online.

Verity used the same password for all her accounts, including her online shopping accounts, email, social media, and her bank app. She also hadn’t set up multi-factor authentication (MFA) on her accounts.

It is important to set up MFA as it adds an extra layer of security, so if hackers try to log into your accounts with stolen login details, you have an extra layer of protection. Verity’s situation also shows why you should never reuse the same password across multiple accounts.
