M4 MacBook Air: One-Day Circuit Tracing

This 2025 M4 MacBook Air still chimed after a water spill - but the screen stayed black.

The customer, from Melbourne CBD postcode 3000, found us through ChatGPT. Our USB-C meter showed 20 V and a normal boot-current sequence: about 0.10 A, 0.25 A, 0.45 A and then 0.23 A. That told us the Mac itself was starting, so the investigation moved to the display backlight circuit.

Normally, with a schematic and boardview, this type of fault could be repaired in around two hours. This was the latest A3240 model with logic board 820-03597, and Apple had altered the backlight circuit from the earlier A3113 design. No A3240 schematic was available.

We spent a day using an A3113 schematic as a reference and physically tracing a matching A3240 donor board. UP800, LP800, RP800, UP950 and the two small 0-ohm links had to be removed from the donor so we could identify every hidden pad connection.

The key path was:
PPBUS_AON -> 0-ohm R2 link -> UP800 pins 9 and 10

On the damaged Mac, the PPBUS_AON side of that connection was missing. A fine jumper wire restored the intended supply path, and the backlight came on immediately. This was not a forced backlight bypass: brightness control, sleep/wake and lid operation all continued to work normally.

We then tested charger and battery operation and ran the screen at maximum brightness for 20-30 minutes. Everything passed. The Mac is now fully functional with its original logic board and data preserved.

For the newest Macs, a missing schematic makes the repair harder, but it does not always make it impossible. A donor board, careful tracing and circuit-level experience can still turn a black-screen machine into a successful repair.

This is why we never like telling customers “the data is gone” too quickly.

This 16-inch MacBook Pro 2019 A2141 / 820-01700 came from the Berwick / Harkaway VIC area after it suddenly died.

The customer had already been told by another shop:

❌ Not repairable
❌ Data gone

Initial USB-C reading:

🔹 5V / 0A

We checked the board and found:

🔹 PPBUS_G3H shorted
🔹 LA850 short to ground
🔹 LA860 short to ground
🔹 LA870 short to ground
🔹 LA950 short to ground
🔹 LA750 short to ground

These rails are related to the AMD GPU and video RAM section. After removing/islanding the failed GPU rails, PPBUS_G3H returned, confirming the AMD GPU / VRAM section was the problem.

The customer accepted the dedicated AMD GPU disable repair option.

The repair process included:

✅ AMD GPU power rails disabled
✅ Fake GPU VR PGOOD sequence retained
✅ U9850 forced permanently to Intel eDP
✅ Intel panel-power request connected to panel power
✅ Intel backlight-enable connected to U8400 enable
✅ BKLT_PWM_MLB2TCON pulled high through 1 kΩ
✅ Full hardware backlight restored
✅ Brightness Slider used for software dimming

Final result:

✅ MacBook working again
✅ Data recovered
✅ System running cooler
✅ Battery runtime improved
✅ Original board retained

This is not a factory-original GPU repair, and it is not suitable for heavy graphics work. But for data recovery and normal daily use, it can be a very good option when the dedicated AMD GPU has failed.

Another successful 16-inch MacBook Pro logic board repair completed.

This MacBook Pro A2141 / 820-01700 came in with a sudden no power fault. No water damage was found.

Initial USB-C reading:

🔹 5V / 0A

We measured the power rails and found:

🔹 PP5V_G3S shorted

Using voltage injection, CA601 became hot. There was a bug drop on CA601, and the board had become carbonised and burned. The damaged board material had to be removed.

The first repair included:

✅ Carbonised short removed
✅ Approx. 5 mm × 5 mm damaged board area cleaned out
✅ 3 broken surface traces repaired
✅ UA600 replaced

After that, the MacBook accepted 20V again, but there was still no display.

So we moved to GPU power-sequence testing.

We found:

🔹 PMU_SYS_ALIVE = 1.8V OK
🔹 DISP_GCON_RESET_L = 1.8V OK
🔹 EG_VR0 / VR1 / VR2 / VR3 / VR4 appeared for about 35 ms
🔹 GPU voltages appeared briefly, then dropped
🔹 PPGFX_S0_GPU reached target voltage, then dropped after about 1 ms

That told us the GPU sequence was starting, but then aborting.

After removing UA600 and checking every pin in diode mode, we found:

🔹 Pin 23 open
🔹 Pin 30 open

We jumpered both pins back to their original paths. After that, all GPU voltages became stable and the MacBook worked normally.

Final result:

✅ No-power fault fixed
✅ Burned board area repaired
✅ GPU no-display fault diagnosed
✅ UA600 open pins repaired
✅ MacBook fully functional again

This case shows why knowing the power sequence matters. Without the oscilloscope and GPU timing logic, it would be easy to replace parts blindly.

Another successful MacBook Pro water damage data recovery case completed.

This 13-inch MacBook Pro 2019 A1989 came from Epping VIC after a bottle leaked inside a bag. The MacBook had no power, and the customer’s first goal was to recover the data.

We did not power it on immediately. With liquid damage, plugging in a charger too early can make the damage worse.

The repair process:

✅ Ultrasonic cleaning first
✅ 9 corroded resistors and capacitors replaced around UB400 / CD3215
✅ USB-C meter still only flashed briefly on all 4 ports
✅ Multimeter showed PPBUS_G3H = 0V
✅ Oscilloscope showed PPBUS_G3H briefly rising to 8.9V, then dropping
✅ PPDCIN_G3H also rose briefly, then collapsed
✅ Followed the 820-00850 power-on sequence
✅ Found PP3V3_G3H_RTC shorted
✅ Diode mode reading = 0.03
✅ Controlled voltage injection used
✅ Thermal camera found CB300 heating at 2.1V
✅ CB300 replaced
✅ MacBook working again
✅ Data recovery successful

This case shows why proper board-level diagnosis matters. A multimeter alone showed 0V, but the oscilloscope revealed the board was trying to start and then shutting down. That clue helped us follow the power sequence and find the real fault.

If your MacBook has liquid damage, do not keep charging it. Turn it off and get it checked properly.

This is one case we really wanted to post.

A customer from regional Victoria drove around 3 hours to us after finding us through xAI search and checking our Google reviews.

The MacBook was a 14-inch MacBook Pro M1 A2442 that had been dropped into a bathtub. It had water damage and no power. The customer’s first goal was simple:

Save the data.

We did not plug it in straight away. With severe liquid damage, powering on the MacBook too early can make the damage worse and reduce the chance of data recovery.

The repair process included:

✅ Ultrasonic cleaning first
✅ 19 corroded resistors and capacitors replaced
✅ Charging circuit diagnosed
✅ R5275 found open and replaced
✅ PPBUS_AON restored to 12.3V
✅ CR853 found hot with thermal camera and replaced
✅ Touchpad found shorting PPBUS_AON
✅ Touchpad replaced
✅ MacBook booted into macOS
✅ Time Machine backup completed
✅ Battery detection repaired by replacing RD154
✅ Right-side sound repaired by replacing UR700 / UR730 / UR760

Final result:

Data saved. MacBook repaired. Touchpad replaced.

One important lesson from this case: after liquid damage, do not shake the MacBook. We often see bottle-leak cases where liquid is forced into the screen film layers during movement inside a bag. A damaged screen can cost a large part of the MacBook’s value.

Turn it off, do not charge it, and get it checked properly.

MacBook A2681 cracked screen repair — only the LCD panel was replaced

This MacBook A2681 arrived with a cracked LCD panel. The screen still showed an image, but it was covered with coloured lines and display distortion.

For this repair, we did not replace the entire display assembly. The lid, hinges and display housing were still usable, so we removed only the damaged LCD panel and installed a new LCD panel on our dust-free workbench.

This type of repair requires careful separation, dust control and correct panel alignment. After the new LCD panel was installed, the MacBook display worked normally again.

Not every cracked MacBook screen needs a full assembly replacement. In some cases, replacing only the LCD panel can be a more cost-effective repair option, depending on the condition of the lid, frame, camera area and backlight layers.

IT-Tech Online Mac Repair Specialist provides MacBook screen repair, LCD panel replacement, logic board repair and data recovery in Melbourne.

Another successful MacBook Pro logic board repair completed.

This 16-inch MacBook Pro A2141 came in with a no power fault. On first test, all four USB-C ports accepted 20V, but the current stayed very low at around 0.02A and the MacBook would not boot.

We followed the power sequence step by step:

✅ PPBUS_G3H present
✅ PP3V3_G3H present
✅ PP1V8_G3S present
✅ PP0V9_SSD0 present
❌ PP2V5_NAND_SSD0 missing

The missing SSD power rail was not shorted, and the enable signal was present. That pointed to the power chip itself. We replaced U9580, and the MacBook powered on normally again.

This is why proper board-level diagnosis matters. A MacBook with no power is not always a dead logic board — sometimes one tiny failed chip can stop the whole machine from starting.

🔬 Science vs. Guesswork: How we saved this 14" MacBook Pro from the scrap heap.

We just finished a complex logic board repair on a 14" MacBook Pro that had "no power." While other shops might guess at the problem, we use precision diagnostics to find the truth.

The Diagnostic Journey:
📍 Step 1: Multimeter testing confirmed a short circuit on the PP3V8_AON power rail (the "Always-On" rail that tells the Mac to wake up).
📍 Step 2: We injected 2v of power and used a Thermal Camera to see exactly where the heat was concentrated. 🌡️
📍 Step 3: Under the microscope, we found a physically cracked capacitor that had caused an over-current, damaging nearby chips.

Why this matters for YOU: A "Board Replacement" at the Apple Store or other shops means your data is GONE because the storage is soldered to that board. By repairing the original logic board at the component level, we kept the customer’s data perfectly intact and saved them a fortune!

✅ Specialist chip-level repairs
✅ Data remains safe
✅ 25+ years of Mac expertise

If your MacBook is acting like a paperweight, bring it to the experts who actually look under the microscope.
