I used to be terrified about what AI would mean for me and my future in business. But I'm honestly not concerned anymore.
AI generated slop is everywhere. Lifeless websites, impersonal emails, social media comments and spammy messages. Fake AI images are selling houses and misleading buyers, AI is writing your doctors notes, policing seat belts in cars, stealing authors and other creative's work and producing more internet rubbish than ever before.
On one hand, I've been impressed with the speed of nuanced quick answers you can get from AI. Claude can write pretty decent code. Sometimes AI generated images are really stunning. Finding meals with random ingredients in your almost-empty pantry is a breeze.
But on the other hand, we're automating ourselves out of everything, and to anyone that's taken a moment to notice, the quality is going downhill in big ways.
A marketer I've followed for years has leaned heavily into AI content, and her mass email output has doubled. But they are all lifeless, have no personality and provide no new takes, no interesting perspectives, often repeating similar topics. Needless to say, I've unsubscribed 😢
I have sent detailed emails and received AI-generated replies (still with with footnotes from ChatGPT!).
I've seen someone asking earnestly in a Facebook group for real human experience and advice, to be flooded with impersonal AI-generated replies.
This content is all content for content's sake, and its the new frustrating reality of working online. But there is also a silver lining to this new hot-mess we find ourselves in.
I saw a quote recently, although cannot recall where/who it was from and its so true: "AI makes bad content good, good content good, and really great content... good."
Be weird. Be compassionate. Let your expertise truly shine with a different take. Produce LESS, but make it QUALITY. Do it for your customers, for people not the algorithms. Unless your content is truly BAD, anything you write yourself, complete with spelling mistakes and dodgy grammar is going to be better than AI.
Don't try cut corners and automate yourself out of business with AI. Use it sparingly, as the tool it is. It's not worth the risk diluting your brand into the same 'good' as everyone else.
Do that and your business will far outlive everyone trying to post AI slop on every platform, all the time. Because when the algorithm overlords finally catch on that people buy from people and conversions are greatly improved by REAL-ness... you'll be the only one left shining 🤓
