Those that know us, know we normally deal business to business.
As a favour to one of our local business friends, we took a look at a brand new no name brand laptop that wouldn't go onto the internet.
We found that the wifi adapter didn't work.
We couldnt find any Australian based importer for the device, so tested with an external wifi adapter.
It would get Wifi but very slow, we have a 2000Mbps connection, it was struggling ro get 1Mbps, we tried the adapter in other devices and it was getting mid 850Mbps (it says Max speed capable is 867Mbps so the adapter is working fine).
We did some other component tests, Memory meant to be 32GB, actual test 2GB, drive meant to be 1TB SSD, actual 80GB
Everything in this brand new laptop purchased online was fake.
We spoke to the pensioner owner, they said that they had reached out to the seller and it only came with a 1 week warranty. Windows was installed 27 September and today is 10 October, 2 weeks!
When buying an important device like a laptop, where possible by in person from a physical store, if you are not sure where, stick with a big box name, like Harvey Norman, JB HiFi, Officeworks, somewhere that if something goes wrong, you can take it back. Each of these types of stores offer specials from time to time so if budgets are tight look for a deal.
Unfortunately if you are buying online, for a no name store, you ran the risk of not getting what you paid for.
If you do buy online, buy from the brands site, like hp.com etc.
Unfortunately for this person, what looked like a good deal has cost them hundreds of dollars as they have in effect purchased junk.
The old adage if it sounds too good to be true it probably is applies in laptops too!
