Had 2 friends in a week ringing with their Macs not working and NO BACKUP! ... All hard drives in computers will fail one day, it's a matter of when, not if.

Have you got backups actively working? If not, contact me today, I can assist.

You may have heard about a vulnerability in phones that allows attackers to compromise a device from nearby using Bluetooth. You, as an iOS phone user (iPhone), are safe from this, it only affects Android and Windows phones.

So I just received a phishing email this morning and it almost fooled me. (Phishing is where bad guys send an email that looks like it is from a reputable organisation, and gives us some reason to click on a link to enter my account and password details, then boom the phishers have got their info, and they can break in to my account.)

This one appeared to be from Apple, with a receipt for a recent music purchase. I get these often and it looked the same. It was however for a song I didn't purchase (Enya?!). So the link below titled "Issues with this transaction?" opens a page to cancel the purchase and 'restore' my Apple ID. The page that opens looks very much like the genuine Apple page. But look at the text in the email: a spelling error. And the email it originates from is not an Apple email address.

I forwarded this email as a report to Apple at [email protected].

Use these tips to avoid scams and learn what to do if you think your Apple ID has been compromised.

The message going around in Facebook messenger to not accept a certain person's friend request as they are a hacker, is a hoax.

http://www.thatsnonsense.com/fake-facebook-message-warns-users-not-accept-jayden-k-smith-hacker/

A fake Facebook warning is urging users not avoid accepting a friend request from a user named Jayden K Smith because he is a hacker. Longer versions of this hoax claim accepting the user will result in your account getting hacked. Variants โ€“ Please tell all the contacts in your Messenger list, notโ€ฆ

Apple has today released software updates for our Macs and iOS devices (iPhones, iPads). I strongly recommend you back up your device before going ahead with this update, as it is a significant one with a change in the underlying system of coding the software.

So for your Mac, ensure you have plugged in your external hard drive and run Time Machine backup; for iOS devices check your iCloud backups have been done (Settings > iCloud > Backup).

If you are NOT yet backing up, contact me for help in setting it up.

Some hacker dudes say they have stolen a heap of people's Apple ID (and iCloud) passwords, and are trying to extort money from Apple otherwise they will 'lock' user's accounts. The deadline given is April 7th. It wouldn't hurt to change your password by then. I've just changed mine.

Easiest way is to go to a computer and go to Apple's Manage Apple ID page. Login, then change password. Use a unique password (more correctly, use a passphrase) that you haven't used elsewhere. Use three or four random words, with one of the words in capitals. Length is more important than complexity, but Apple do require at least one numeral so you'll have to add that, perhaps at the start. Separate your words with a punctuation mark.

Then, of course, you will enter the new password in your PASSWORD MANAGER. If you don't have one of these.. why not?? ๐Ÿค” I can help you get one set up easily.

Your Apple ID is the account you use for all Apple services.

OK, so you are probably not going to listen to this 35 minute podcast unless you are geeky like me, so here's the TL;DL (too long didn't listen) version:

(Oh PS don't read on if you DO want to listen to it, plot spoiler!)

A guy in USA wakes up to find his Uber account has been hacked somehow, a dude in Russia is clocking up Uber rides and all getting charged to our guy's credit card. After long investigation, turns out his Gmail account was probably hacked, the password stolen, then bad guys used computer software (bot) to test the password in multiple other web logins, including Uber; since our guy DOESN'T USE A PASSWORD MANAGER, he uses the same password all over the place. (insert sad sound effect here.) So the bad guys sold his details (for $7!) on the web. Someone bought it and starts using his account.

Moral of the story! .. well you probably know by now. If you would like help to secure yourself online, contact us to find out how. ;-)

Somewhere in Russia, a man calls for a car. Somewhere in New York City, a stranger's phone buzzes.
