Google Maps or a dedicated GPS — do you really need both? 🤔

For everyday driving, Google Maps is hard to beat. You can even download areas before you leave and navigate offline.

But once you start heading further off the beaten track, a dedicated GPS can offer a lot more for 4WD touring — especially with mapping such as Hema Maps, which is designed with remote and off-road travel in mind. Depending on the setup, you can get detailed topographic mapping, 4WD tracks, elevation information, waypoints and remote campsites. 🗺️

A recent Whitsundays rescue is a powerful reminder of why the right emergency gear matters.

A family of four, including two children, was winched to safety after their yacht ran aground on Elizabeth Reef. Reports noted they had activated their EPIRB, helping alert rescuers and support the response.

An EPIRB is a dedicated distress beacon for when things go seriously wrong offshore.

In SA, carrying an EPIRB is mandatory when operating more than 3 nautical miles from shore in most state waters, and more than 5 nautical miles in Gulf St Vincent or Spencer Gulf. Requirements vary by state, so always check local rules.

For remote trips, an EPIRB can also form part of a broader safety setup alongside a satellite phone or communicator like ZOLEO.
