designaustria, the interest organization and knowledge centre for design in Austria, first launched the Joseph Binder Award – an international competition with a focus on graphic design and illustration – in 1996. It is named after one of the most outstanding graphic designers and illustrators active in Austria between the two World Wars, who subsequently also revolutionized visual communication in the United States. Joseph Binder’s motto was: »In design, everything has a function. Design has a representational function. Design has a communicational function. Design has a motivational function.«

The Joseph Binder Award is held every two years. The entries are assessed by an international jury of experts. Previous jury panels included such recognized authorities as Cordula Alessandri, Lo Breier, Gerd Dumbar, Fons Hickmann, Freda Sack, Stefan Sagmeister, Niklaus Troxler, and Lars Müller. Graphic designers, illustrators, agencies and students enrolled in relevant courses from all over the world are invited to enter their works realized in the last two years.

All the way from Manila to our JBA2027 jury: Dan Matutina Dan Matutina 🇵🇭
The graphic designer and illustrator is co-founder of the Manila studio Plus63 Plus63 and a partner at Hydra Design Group Hydra Design Group. His work combines angular, graphic shapes with hand-painted textures and has been commissioned by Google, Apple, WIRED, The Guardian and Nike, among many others.
