🎯 Last week at Esterox, we had an incredibly valuable online session on Spec-Driven Development (SDD) led by our partner, DavidL.
David is an experienced engineering leader and currently Founder & CEO of ShipKodeAi He previously held leadership roles at Cisco and AWS, where he helped scale large platforms and global engineering teams.
🚀 One of the biggest insights was that SDD is not limited to new projects; it can be gradually integrated into existing and even large-scale legacy systems without full rewrites. This makes SDD a practical, low-risk approach for teams looking to improve development quality.
👨💻 We also explored Kiro, an AI-powered agentic Integrated Development Environment (IDE) developed by Amazon Web Services (AWS). Kiro brings SDD to life by structuring specs into three files: requirements, design, and tasks. This ensures traceability between specs and code, better alignment across teams, and long-term maintainability, core promises of the SDD approach.
Beyond tooling, SDD works hand in hand with AI. When specs are clear and structured, AI can automate tasks, improve efficiency, and keep implementation tightly aligned with requirements.
🔄 A key takeaway: success with SDD starts with iteration, reviewing and refining specs before implementation to ensure accuracy, feasibility, and quality outcomes.
✨ Grateful to David for sharing his expertise with our team!
