We've been having great chats about collaboration practices with senior software engineers in our industry. For some, a common difficulty is trying to work with members across oceans. This is another one of those problems that software can't solve. Videoconferencing and tools like Slack have made remote work a viable way to build a team. However, they can't solve the need for synchronous workdays, which are the lynchpin to effective teams.

We evaluated some screening tools to assist us with hiring software engineers, and threw every one of them out. There are too many ways in which these tools introduce bias and none of them were effective in assessing skills. To date, there has been no comparable tech advancement that matches a human in this process. We do our hiring old school and with feeling.

We would like to introduce you to Gladys West. Born in 1930, she grew up on a farm in Virginia and received a full ride scholarship to Virginia State based on academic achievement. Her stunning intellect led her to acquire two masters degrees and a job at the Naval Surface Warfare Center.

Her legacy derives from remote sensing, programming, and modeling that allowed her to create an extremely accurate geodetic model of the Earth. This model is what GPS is based upon, and every time you use a map program you are using a result of her work.

It wasn’t until late in life that her accomplishments were recognized. She went through her entire career watching the accolades and opportunities go to her white coworkers. Only in the last few years has her work and its influence been given due recognition.

Funny enough, she still uses a paper map over anything else because she trusts her brain most of all.

There is a worldwide shortage of developers, and the only way to address it is to focus on the pipeline into software development. Connecting the people to the project doesn't start with job ads, it begins with new careers in tech. We are partnering with other organizations in an education initiative that will provide much needed opportunities.
