Muslims all around the world celebrate Eid ul-Fitr during the holy month of Ramadan, which is a celebration of breaking their fast after a month of fasting from sunrise to sunset. Eid falls in Shawwal, the month after Ramadan, and, just as the month of fasting begins with the sighting of the new crescent moon, Eid follows the sighting of the moon for Shawwal.
Muslims all across the world gather to celebrate Eid, eating enormous feasts, listening to discourses, and attending mass prayers at mosques. They also utilize this opportunity to express their thankfulness to Allah for letting the month of Ramadan to pass without incident, both out of respect and gratitude.
