WordPress is reaching 1/3 of the market

The CMS WordPress is used by 27 percent of the world's sites, according to new statistics from research firm W3Techs. WordPress is increasing by about 2 percentage points a year.
With 27 percent of the world's sites, WordPress leaves competitors like Joomla (3.3 percent), Drupal (2.2 percent) far behind, according W3Techs. However, WordPress does not take market share from Joomla and Drupal, but rather from the sites that lack content management (54 percent). Even commercial publishing tools like Squarespace (0.5 per cent) are growing.

Publishing tools have become an open source market in which the four most popular publishing tools are open source. Open source systems have created their own eco system of add-ons and suppliers.

Facebook is building a censorship tools

Facebook is building a censorship tool that prevents that some posts appear in certain geographical areas. Anything to break into the Chinese market, writes The New York Times.
China's huge market behind the red firewall has long attracted Facebook. Facebook's founders are studying Mandarin and have visited China several times.

To be able to enter the Chinese market, Facebook has developed a software to censor certain topics in certain geographic areas, confirms a Facebook employee and former Facebook employees to New York Times. The tool is designed to open up the Chinese market, where the government censors the Internet. The idea is not that Facebook themselves will block content, but to provide tools for third parties to censor. Most probably a Chinese partner.

Censoring the content is nothing new to Facebook, who has blocked content to countries such as Pakistan, Russia and Turkey. 55 000 posts in 20 countries have been blocked during the period July 2015 to December 2015.

The social network, blocked in China since 2009, has developed software to keep posts from appearing in users’ news feeds in specific geographic areas, current and former employees said.

Interest is falling for smart watches
The interest in smart watches, decreased sharply in the third quarter. Hardest hit was Apple Watch, whose sales fell by 70 percent, according to IDC.

Q3 was not a good quarter for smart watch brands. Sales of smart watches fell by 52 percent to 2.7 million watches in Q3 compared with the same period last year, according to IDC.

One reason for the drop is that Apple made the Apple Watch available widely among retailers in Q3 2015 and that Apple's new models were only available for sale during the last two weeks of Q3 2016. Sales were, in other words, so high last year that it was difficult to match it this year.

The big winner in Q3 was Garmin, who sold 600,000 watches and increased its market share by 18.2 percentage points to 20.5 percent. Garmin focuses entirely on exercise and health, compared to their competitors who are trying to sell multifunction watches.

Google is testing voice ads
Google is testing audio ads which are played after the user has made a search by voice commands, writes the newspaper MediaPost.

Over the past year, rumors have been floating about audio ads, according to MediaPost. Voice ads are a way to capture users when they’re in motion or drivers who are unable to enter keywords.

The user will, by using the Chrome browser on an iPhone, be able to ask questions about the products in the stores nearby and get several results dictated to him. Google Assistant can for example answer that there are dresses in the store A on B street for $ 295th. The user can then specify the search, i.e search for "a little black dress."

Most likely, the data for the ads will be pulled from Google Shopping.

Google has been testing a feature on mobile that allows consumers to verbally query the item at a nearby store and have multiple results returned in audio along with prices and availability. A more detailed list serves up on the mobile screen.

Facebook revenue 26 billion dollars this year
Facebook will announce 26 billion dollars in revenue this year, according to research firm eMarketer.

Facebook's growth places their biggest rival Google in the shade.

• Facebook's revenue this year will increase by 52 percent to 26 billion dollars.
• Facebook's mobile revenues will grow by 66 percent to 21 billion dollars this year.
• Next year, Facebook will turn over $ 33.8 billion.

Google, with a turnover of almost four times more than Facebook, still surprised analysts by posting a 20 percent increase in revenue in the third quarter.

Facebook, which is reporting earnings this week, continues to grow its ad revenues and user base across its properties. More of these revenues are coming from outside the US, and more are also coming from mobile placements, which will net the social network nearly $22 billion in revenues this year.

Facebook offers a corporate intranet

Workplace by Facebook, is a communication platform for companies tired of boring intranet. It's all about being able to share information and communicate.

Workplace by Facebook is separated from the normal Facebook and the business users will not use their private profiles in Workplace by Facebook. Early tests of Swedish companies show that Facebook at Work is used much more than the traditional intranet.

What makes Facebook's business service stand out, is that the aim is to make both employers and workers meet on the platform.

Workplace by Facebook includes features such as:

• Groups
• News Feed
• Chat
• Event
• Live video
• Automatic translation

Workplace by Facebook has been tested since January last year and two Swedish companies have run the beta version, Telenor and Evry. The service is based on the company's basic philosophy, allowing colleagues to share information and communicate with each other. Users can create events, collaborate on projects and send messages within the workgroup.

Security is higher in the Workplace by Facebook than normal Facebook, to ensure that information cannot be accessed from outside the company.

The use of social media in business is not quite developed yet and has been limited to a tool for communication and to facilitate project work. The transition to an enterprise platform can be more difficult than Facebook might think, warn the analysts.

Spotify is said to want to buy SoundClound
The music service Spotify is said to be in negotiations to buy the music service SoundCloud, according to the Financial Times.

One reason for the purchase is said to be that Spotify wants to prepare themself for the increasingly intense competition from Apple.

SoundCloud, which is often described as the music’s YouTube, would provide Spotify with a viable community of creators and fans and that is something Spotify lacks today.

Biggest obstacle to the deal is the price tag, which despite of SoundCloud only turning over 19 million dollars during 2014, has been said to land on 1 billion dollars.

Moments opens to all
The ability to gather a dozen tweet to a group, a function called Moments, has opened for all Twitter users.

Twitter launched Moments a year ago, for media companies such as BuzzFeed and The New York Times, to publish a group of tweets, often on a specific subject, in one collection. Moments enabled users to focus on one subject and tweet about it. The function Moments is now open to all users.

The user who has managed to get access to Moments, will get a dedicated button below the Moments tab on the desktop version of Twitter.

It is possible to collect others’ tweet or your own to one Moment. Pictures are especially important when you publish Moments as the "cover" for a Moment is a collection of images.

Gartner: AI takes over from mail apps
The apps importance will decline in the coming years while artificial intelligence takes over, according to research firm Gartner.

The world will continue to use apps, but the importance of apps delivering services to users will decrease in the next few years as bots and virtual assistants will replace the apps' functionality, according to the analyst and vice president David Willis at Gartner.

- Post-app-era means that there will be more data and code in the cloud and less on gadgets, thanks to the better mobile networks, said David Willis at an event in South Africa, according to the magazine Computer Weekly.

The Post-app era has already begun and will continue developing until 2020 and maybe later.

- Organizations should prepare by being agile and tactical, plan for new skills, assess opportunities created in the Post-app era and develop a digital strategy that integrates different technologies.

An important driving force behind the journey towards a mobility that is less reliant on apps is the expected growth of the Internet of Things (IoT), according to Gartner.

Google Materials Guidelines
Google went from an unattractive design to services that compete with Apple in good looks. The reason behind the design change is called Google Materials Guidelines.

Google's early services were ugly and unprofessional looking. The explanation is that Google is an engineering driven company where all the resources were normally spent on refining the algorithms behind the search strip and to develop server halls for their extreme needs. This is no longer the case. If you study two of Google’s latest apps, Google Trips and Google Allo, the design matches Apple’s class.

The reason behind this is that Google hired some of the world's best designers and produced Google Materials Guidelines to set a design language to the company's services. Furthermore, that they released guidelines accessible for all who are interested.
According to Google, Material Design makes better use of available space and provides a consistent user experience, regardless of whether the service / site is approached from a mobile platform or desktop.

“Unlike real paper, our digital materials can expand and change intelligently. Materials have physical surfaces and edges. Seams and shadows provides the sense of what you can touch” designer Matias Duarte said at the launch of Material Design.

Material Design creates a sense of depth and indicates which parts of the site / app that you can interact with. This is vital when all interactions are moving to devices with touch screens.

Physical materials are the metaphor for Materials Design, where the material defines the relationship between space and movement. The basic idea is that the technology is inspired by paper and ink. Surfaces and edges providing visual clues that help users quickly understand the technology behind the physical world.

Elements and components grid, typography, color and images are not only visually pleasing, but creates a sense of hierarchy, meaning and focus. Focus on the various documents and components creates a visual guide to the user.

Motion allows users to draw parallels between what they see on screen and in real life. It provides both feedback and a sense of familiarity.

Using these guidelines, you can build websites which look and feel similar to expensive apps.

Google Home to be launched in October
Google's virtual assistant for voice commands in the hardware device Google Home will be launched in October, according to the news site Android Police.

Google Home’s speaker holds a virtual assistant, that can be controlled with voice commands and will be launched in early October at the price $129, which is $40 cheaper than Amazon's Echo that offers the same functionality. It was also rumored that Apple is working on a similar gadget.

Amazon was the first to launch a virtual assistant home with Amazon Alexa. The gadget is called Amazon Echo. Google Home is a small white speaker without buttons, loaded with Google Assistant. Google Assistant is artificial intelligence that answers questions and is said to be able to learn what you like. For example, it can recommend a good movie based on your interests.

Google Home has a speaker and microphone. It plays music from Google Music, Spotify or any local Android device. Home can be connected to other gadgets and act as a hub. It should for instance be able to switch on and off lights as well as control the temperature in the home. Obviously, you can google with it too!
