“THE 12TH ANNUAL CLIMATE CONTROL AWARDS 2022, 5 DEC 2022” Incepted in 2011, the Climate Control Awards, with a legacy of 11 years, has been evaluating, validating and recognizing the best practices of the HVACR industry in the GCC region. In this time frame, more than 300 Awards have been distributed and tens of HVACR related companies recognized for their leadership and performance. Such companies include manufacturers and managers of HVACR equipment, contractors, consultants, developers and operation and maintenance (O&M) service providers, amongst others. In addition, the Climate Control Awards have recognized pioneering individuals and innovations. We always carry a lot of pride in being the alumnus of one of the finest engineering institutions in the World, the IITs (Indian Institute of Technology). We feel even prouder when a fellow alumnus endorses our hard work.READER REVIEW I would love to see this book in the personal library of all energy management professionals, from a budding professional to a seasoned professional - this is poised to become a ready reckoner for them. Sougata, being one of the earliest certified LEED professionals of that region, has the experience of shaping up the industry from its infancy. He has presented his collection of 'pearls of wisdom' of over 25 years in the form of methods and habits. 5 (reasons for failures) X 7 (habits) X 14 (skills) mantra summarizes it all. I personally feel these can be applied in any career paths and can be considered as management lessons which have been beautifully brought to us through short stories to make it easy to read and connect to. I found this book to be so riveting as in every step I could relate to the core principles Sougata has highlighted in his book, and found it so relevant in my everyday professional life. Delighted with the formal launch of my book “ENERGY MANAGEMENT IN REAL ESTATE: THE SECRETS TO SUCCESS” at The Client Consultant Contractor Conference on 13 June 2022, Dubai.

“When’ and ‘how’ to initiate an energy management programme across a corporation’s asset portfolio? ‘Which’ model of energy management service is the best fit for a certain facility? Should a corporation opt for the ESCO model or should it invest its own cash? What criteria must a facility meet in order to ensure a successful energy management programme/ project? What issues must be taken care of so that the energy management programme is not a failure? Is there a time tested energy management governance framework for corporations that will ensure successful and sustainable savings? Who should internally lead the corporate energy management programme? What skillsets must the person have? How to procure an energy management service? Is ESCO really the panacea the energy management industry looking for?

Corporations often grapple with such questions when considering an energy management programme, leading to either hesitancy to implement or potentially incorrect service model to be adopted. Sougata Nandi, an Energy Engineer from IIT and a practising Energy Management Outlier with 25 years of implementation experience, addresses such questions and more, through anecdotal evidence in this bespoke publication for CXOs, Management personnel and budding Energy Managers/ Engineers, wishing to implement highly effective, successful and sustainable corporation wide energy management programme.

Energy Management in Real Estate: The Secrets to Success, by Sougata Nandi, is a timely reminder in a world distracted by COVID-19 that much still needs to be done in mitigating climate change. Written by an Energy Engineer by training, who had the distinct privilege of working for clients and working as a client in marquee energy management projects, the book, expectedly enough, is a multi-perspective narrative that gives readers an insight into how to navigate a corporate minefield to achieve the objective of energy savings. At the same time, it seeks to inspire consumers to become energy managers by overcoming self-doubt and eliminating myths on the pathway that threaten to derail well-meaning efforts at curbing energy use.

Heavily anecdotal, the book draws from the author’s numerous project-related experiences, among others, to drive home the importance of commitment, goal-setting and understanding the challenges at hand, prior to implementing an energy management programme. Perhaps one of the most important chapters is on why energy management programmes fail. The author is in his elements as he provocatively lists and elaborates the reasons, among them being ‘inadequately empowered ownership and stakeholder mismanagement’, ‘inappropriate energy management service model’ and ‘inherent building design and operation challenges’.

The author is quite the eco-sage in page after page of riveting narrative. His advice is based on sound engineering and management principles and, at the same time, underlines the importance of human psychology and understanding organisational behaviour. The book is a crucial read for those wishing to draft customised sustainable development guidelines and checklists in corporates as well as in residences.

It defines primary principles in ways that are easy to understand and to follow – many of them supported with real life scenarios and examples culled from the author’s practical experience across several decades, powerful in their authenticity, simply put.

Energy management and sustainable development are important subjects, with considerable commercial value to those that pay large energy bills. It goes beyond that, to lifetime value for us that look to planet Earth for sustenance. The book makes for easy reading and understanding, simplifying a complex subject, for which the author deserves our sincere thanks.

I recommend this book as necessary reading, for those that are liable for large energy consumption – developers, building owners, their senior management teams. In fact, wherever energy is a significant expense item- retail, factories ……it will identify ways and means to reduce carbon footprint, and energy bills, without high-capex investment and without impacting customer experience negatively.
