HEIF Heist: How a Malicious Image Could Become a Gateway to Enterprise Systems

A malicious image file may look harmless. Behind the scenes, however, the software responsible for processing that image can provide attackers with a much more valuable target.

A seemingly harmless image upload could give attackers a way into far more than a single application. New research from Hacktron has uncovered an attack path dubbed “HEIF Heist,” showing how malicious HEIF, HEIC and AVIF files could exploit weaknesses in widely used image-decoding software and potentially expose sensitive data or enable remote code ex*****on. The research is particularly notable for another reason: the researchers used frontier AI systems to accelerate vulnerability discovery and exploit development. Their findings, including an attack path involving OpenAI systems, offer a timely warning for security teams: the software quietly processing user-uploaded files can be just as important to protect as the applications users can see.

🔐 Cybersecurity Budgeting Is Also a Cybersecurity Challenge

One of the challenges I have observed across institutions and organizations globally - particularly in developing countries - is not only a lack of cybersecurity technology, but also a lack of expertise when defining cybersecurity budgets and requirements.

I remember a project where the estimated cybersecurity requirements were more than $60,000, while the organization had allocated less than $6,000 for the entire cybersecurity scope.

What made the situation more concerning was the scale and strategic importance of the organization, combined with significant security requirements.

When we looked deeper, we understood that cybersecurity professionals with the right expertise had not been sufficiently involved during the budgeting and planning process. The local IT team was doing its best, but did not have the specialized knowledge required to accurately assess the organization's cybersecurity needs.

This is an important lesson:
Cybersecurity budgeting is not simply about putting a number on a spreadsheet. It requires an understanding of threats, technologies, risks, compliance requirements, business priorities and the potential financial impact of a cyber incident.

Cyber threats and cybercrime will not wait for an organization to be ready.

A security gap that appears to cost a few thousand dollars to address can potentially expose an organization to losses running into hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars, depending on the nature and scale of an incident.

J’ai eu le plaisir de prendre part à la première journée de GISEC Global 2026 à Dubaï, l’un des rendez-vous majeurs de l’écosystème mondial de la cybersécurité.

I had the pleasure of taking part in Day 1 of GISEC Global 2026 in Dubai, one of the world’s leading gatherings for cybersecurity professionals, technology innovators, and industry leaders.

It was a great opportunity to reconnect with partners, meet global cybersecurity solution providers, discover emerging technologies, and exchange ideas with cybersecurity leaders from around the world.

I also had the great privilege of meeting Dr. Muhammad AlKuwaiti, Head of Cyber Security, UAE Government. It was a valuable opportunity to exchange perspectives on the evolving cybersecurity landscape and the importance of strengthening cyber resilience in the UAE and across the region.

Exploited in the Wild: Critical SQL Flaw Gives Attackers Root Access

A critical vulnerability in Cisco Secure Email Gateway is being actively exploited, giving unauthenticated remote attackers a potential path from a specially crafted email to root-level command ex*****on on the underlying system. Tracked as CVE-2026-76461 and rated 9.8 on the scale, the flaw puts organizations running affected versions under immediate pressure to patch and investigate.

MikroTik urges users to upgrade RouterOS as security researchers confirm active exploitation of vulnerabilities that can expose internet-facing routers to full compromise.

MikroTik’s latest RouterOS security update has taken on a new urgency. What initially appeared to be an important but largely precautionary update has now been linked to active attacks against internet-accessible devices, according to CERT Polska. The vulnerabilities, tracked collectively as “MikroTrick,” can allow attackers to bypass SSH authentication and escalate privileges to full administrative control on vulnerable routers.

🔴🇺🇸FLASH: Elon Musk et sa société SpaceX veulent remplacer les avions par des fusées afin de réduire les trajets à longue distance à quelques minutes seulement. L’entreprise travaille sérieusement sur ce concept appelé « Earth-to-Earth » (Terre à Terre), en utilisant la fusée Starship qui voyagerait à une vitesse pouvant atteindre environ 27 000 km/h dans l’espace avant de redescendre sur Terre. Le trajet de New York à Shanghai, qui demande aujourd’hui environ 15 heures d’avion, pourrait ainsi se faire en seulement 39 minutes avec Starship. De la même façon, le vol Londres-Hong Kong passerait de près de 12 heures à 34 minutes, tandis qu’un voyage entre Los Angeles et Toronto ne prendrait plus que 24 minutes au lieu de 4 heures.⬇️
