“Dubai-it” is now an official verb that means achieving something extraordinary, with excellence, in record time.

A big phrase, unless you’re talking about a city that turned the desert into one of the world’s most ambitious global hubs.

The verb is new, but the philosophy behind it has defined Dubai for decades. Not speed for the sake of speed, but speed with exceptional quality. Not ambition without a foundation, but ambition backed by ex*****on and visible results.

This mindset feels very close to how we build at XPANCEO.

We’re developing smart contact lenses at the intersection of optics, electronics, materials science, and biosensing, while also solving the hard questions of power, manufacturing, scalability, and AI-enabled interaction. There’s no existing playbook for this, so we’re building the next interface from the ground up.

Dubai has created a culture where ambitious ideas are expected to move fast, scale, and become real. For deep-tech companies, that matters, because breakthroughs need more than talent or capital — they need ecosystems that make ex*****on part of the default.

𝗫𝗣𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘𝗢 𝘅 𝗝𝗕𝗗 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗔𝗥 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹

A display for a contact lens can't simply be a smaller version of the one used in smart glasses. It has to stay comfortable and safe sitting directly on the eye, be a fraction of a millimeter wide, and run on very little power. That calls for a completely different design, and it's exactly what XPANCEO and JBD are building together.

The project marks the second phase of our collaboration. In the first phase, we integrated the smallest off-the-shelf microdisplay into the contact lens, powered it wirelessly, and developed a unique optical system that lets the eye comfortably focus on an image from a display positioned directly on the eye, overcoming the eye's natural limits.

Now we're building a custom microdisplay made specifically for a smart contact lens.

Getting the size right is only part of the challenge. The display also has to meet technical requirements most other industries never face, including an ultra-low-power architecture designed to run on minimal current while staying safe this close to the eye.

Brightness is one of the biggest requirements. Because the image is projected directly onto the retina, the light output has to be carefully balanced: vivid enough to see clearly across different lighting conditions, including bright environments, while remaining comfortable and safe for the eye. That balance allows the display to operate at significantly lower brightness than conventional AR wearables, reducing power consumption in a system where every fraction of energy matters.

With this partnership, XPANCEO and JBD are moving beyond early prototypes toward the first mass-market production run of specialized microdisplays for smart contact lenses.

China, here we come.

XPANCEO is heading to the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2026, one of the world’s key meeting points for business leaders, policymakers, scientists, and founders shaping what comes next.

On June 24, Roman Axelrod will join two sessions at the Forum. At the “Global Innovation Exchange: Startups Across Borders” roundtable, he’ll discuss what it really takes for deep-tech companies to move from a local breakthrough to global scale when the old playbook no longer works.

Later, on the “When Thought Becomes an Interface” panel, Roman will share how the next wave of computing will reshape the way humans evolve alongside technology.

For XPANCEO, this is more than another event — it’s a chance to put smart contact lenses at the center of a global conversation about innovation, growth, and what comes after today’s devices.

For many people, health monitoring has become part of daily life. That doesn’t mean it has become comfortable. Needles, blood samples, bulky devices, frequent hospital visits — many monitoring technologies still demand too much effort from the people who rely on them most.

Tear fluid is rarely seen as a source of health data. Yet it carries far more biological information than most people realize, even though concentrations are low enough that reading it accurately remains a real engineering challenge.

Glucose monitoring is one part of the picture. For the 830 million people living with diabetes, and the many more at risk, it remains invasive and uncomfortable.

Tear fluid contains glucose as well, and tear glucose has been shown to reflect blood glucose trends, with a natural physiological delay of around 10–15 minutes. We are developing a smart contact lens that reads glucose from tear fluid — the same way a home glucometer works, using electrochemical sensing.

For medications with serious side effects, knowing whether the previous dose is still active can be critical, and tear fluid can help answer that question too.

The contact lens is worn as usual and at the end of the day, is placed into a standard contact lens container: a compact reading device with a built-in spectrometer. Molecule concentrations in tear fluid are extremely low, which is why the contact lens uses proprietary gold nanoparticles to amplify the signal, so that the spectrometer can identify molecules by the way each one absorbs and reflects light.

This is only the beginning of what tear fluid can reveal. The same approach could be extended to hormones, vitamins, and other biomarkers. We believe the next generation of health technology should work more naturally with the body, rather than demand constant effort from the people using it.
