Plugging a USB drive into a ship or yacht computer always seems harmless.

Until that innocent little stick turns out to be carrying malware and suddenly your chart system, bridge workstation, or engine control computer is having a very bad day.

USB devices used for updates, maintenance, or quick file transfers are still one of the easiest ways to introduce cyber trouble onboard. Commercial fleet or private yacht, the risk does not care how polished the teak looks.

A basic USB control policy is not overkill. It is common sense.

Use approved devices only.
Scan removable media before use.
Restrict USB access on critical systems.
Train crew not to treat personal devices like trusted equipment.

Because sometimes operational disruption does not start with a hacker in a dark room. It starts with someone saying, "Just plug this in for a second."

Constellation Cyber Consultancy helps fleets and yacht operators build practical cyber controls that actually work onboard.

The maritime industry continues to evolve, and the growing presence of women across the sector is an important part of that progress.

From navigation and engineering to surveying, logistics, and maritime consultancy, women are contributing their expertise across both shipboard and shore-based roles. Their professionalism, dedication, and technical capability strengthen an industry that operates around the clock and across every ocean.

At Constellation Marine Services, we recognize and appreciate the contributions of women working throughout the maritime community. Their work supports safer operations, stronger teams, and a more capable industry.

On International Women’s Day, we acknowledge the women whose skills and commitment help keep the maritime world moving.

Recent reports confirm that the update system of the widely used text editor Notepad++ was compromised in a supply chain attack.

While the core software itself was not directly altered, attackers reportedly interfered with the update delivery process, meaning some users could have unknowingly downloaded malicious versions.

This incident highlights an important reality:
• Even trusted and widely used software tools can become targets.
• For businesses, the key takeaway isn’t panic, it’s awareness and preparedness.

What organisations should do:
• Ensure all systems are running the latest verified versions
• Limit who can install or update software internally • Monitor endpoints for unusual behaviour
• Strengthen supplier and software risk assessments

Supply chain attacks continue to grow because they exploit trust. The stronger your verification and monitoring processes, the lower your exposure.

At Constellation Cyber, we continue to support organisations in strengthening software integrity controls and improving visibility across their digital environments.

If your teams rely on third-party tools for development or operations, now is a good time to review how those tools are managed and monitored.

QR codes are everywhere. But cybercriminals are now using them as a new entry point for spear phishing attacks.

Spear phishing is a highly targeted cyberattack where attackers impersonate a trusted source to trick a specific individual or organization into revealing credentials or sensitive information.

A malicious QR code can:
- Redirect users to fake login pages
- Trigger malware downloads
- Capture credentials silently in the background

At Constellation Cyber Consultancy, we advise staying vigilant and aware of everyday cyber risks.
✔ Check where a QR code comes from before scanning
✔ Avoid scanning QR codes from unexpected messages or unfamiliar places
✔ Stay informed about common scams and use basic security protections

One scan is all it takes. Awareness is your first line of defence.
