Ever notice how easy it is to believe someone if they just sound 100% sure of themselves, confident and fluent?
We have a massive blind spot when it comes to machines that "speak" well. Think about it: if you type 2 + 2 into a calculator and it says 5, you immediately know it’s broken.
But if you ask ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini to explain a law or diagnose a weird theory, and it completely makes up a fake answer, most of us just say, "Wow, thanks!" and move on.
Why? Because for our entire lives, we’ve used a mental shortcut: we often confuse confidence with competence. When someone talks smoothly, with zero hesitation, our brains assume they must be telling the truth.
These new AI chatbots aren't actually built to give you hard facts. They are basically incredibly advanced versions of the "auto-complete" on your phone's keyboard.
Because they never stammer, never say "um," and always use perfect grammar, our brains automatically trust them.
So, how should we use them?
Stop thinking of AI as an all-knowing genius. Instead, treat it like a smooth-talking salesperson.
This salesperson can pitch you ten great ideas before you even blink. But because they desperately want to close the deal and hate admitting when they don't know something, they will occasionally make up a confident lie just to keep you happy.
You love having the salesperson around because they are full of energy and save you hours of brainstorming.
But you would never, ever sign their contract without reading the fine print yourself first and verifying the facts.
