CAN TOKENISATION OPEN A NEW ROUTE TO PROJECT CAPITAL IN ZIMBABWE?
Zimbabwe has significant real-world assets and infrastructure opportunities—but many viable projects still struggle to access sufficiently patient, diversified and transparent capital.
Tokenisation could provide an additional financing pathway. However, it must begin with a bankable project, enforceable rights and an appropriate regulatory structure—not simply the creation of a token.
Consider Zimbabwe’s dams.
A properly structured model could potentially use tokenised project bonds or securities issued through a special-purpose vehicle to mobilise funding for:
💧 Dam construction and rehabilitation
⚡ Hydropower infrastructure
🌾 Irrigation development
☀️ Floating solar installations
🚰 Water-treatment and distribution systems
Investors would not be purchasing Zimbabwe’s water or direct ownership of a public dam. Instead, qualifying investors could acquire regulated digital instruments linked to clearly defined project rights or revenue streams—subject to government authority, securities regulation, environmental approvals and investor-protection requirements.
Potential cash flows might arise from electricity offtake agreements, irrigation-service charges, water-treatment contracts or other legally established project revenues.
The complete readiness pathway would include:
Feasibility → Due Diligence → Legal Structure → SPV → Token Design → KYC/AML → Custody → Investor Access → Market Readiness
When responsibly designed, this approach could potentially:
🔸 Broaden access to infrastructure capital
🔸 Enable fractional participation by eligible investors
🔸 Improve transparency over the use of funds
🔸 Create auditable ownership and transaction records
🔸 Connect infrastructure development with green and impact-finance markets
The key question is not:
“How quickly can Zimbabwe tokenise a dam?”
It is:
“Can the project establish bankable revenues, appropriate public-sector authority, investor protections and a compliant digital investment structure?”
At Reload Fintech Consultancy, we explore how blockchain, digital finance and responsible tokenisation can support African infrastructure and enterprise development.
