POLICE ENCOURADGE EARLY REPORTING OF GENDER BASED VIOLENCE.

By Morgan Chomba,

The Zambia Police Service has urged members of the public to promptly report all forms of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) to the nearest police station, warning that delays in reporting often worsen the situation for victims.

Speaking in a telephone interview with Mafken News, Police Public Relations Officer Mr. Godfrey Chilabi said communities should not hesitate to report abuse cases as soon as they occur.

Mr. Chilabi noted that GBV reports can be made anonymously, adding that the police service remains committed to protecting the confidentiality of both victims and informants.

He emphasized that early reporting enables officers to respond quickly, safeguard victims, and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.

Mr. Chilabi further encouraged the public to work closely with law enforcement agencies in the ongoing fight against Gender-Based Violence across the country.

HARRY KALABA CRITICIZES FREE EDUCATION LAW OVER POOR SCHOOL INFRASTRUCTURE.

By Rogan Labika

Citizens First party leader Harry Kalaba has criticized the impact of the free education law, stating that it lacks proper implementation due to a shortage of facilities in government schools.

Speaking during at Radio Program in Mkushi district, Mr. Kalaba argued that the free education law will only be meaningful if government facilities are upgraded to standards that accommodate children from both poor and wealthy backgrounds.

He further claimed that the current state of public schools makes them suitable only for the less privileged, adding that the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) government should not celebrate prematurely.

This comes a week after President Hakainde Hichilema signed the free education bill into law.

MINING EXPERT URGES SINO METALS TO STRENGTHEN ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLIANCE

By Rogan Labika,

Mining expert Charles Mulila has urged Sino Metals Leach Zambia Limited to strictly adhere to Zambia’s environmental regulations as it continues remediation works in the Chambishi Kalusale area of Copperbelt Province.

His remarks follow the company’s announcement that it has made significant progress in rehabilitating areas affected by the collapse of its tailings dams in February last year. Mr. Mulila cautioned the company against repeating past mistakes and stressed the need to ensure the structural integrity and proper management of tailings storage facilities.

He further called for enhanced monitoring systems and stronger controls over waste discharge structures to prevent future environmental incidents and safeguard surrounding communities.

Mr. Mulila also encouraged mining firms, particularly foreign-owned companies, to engage local communities through regular consultative meetings to keep residents informed about environmental protection measures and safety procedures.

Meanwhile, Sino Metals Leach Zambia Chief Executive Officer Li Xian Yuan said the company remains committed to environmental restoration and safety, adding that remediation works on Tailings Storage Facility Number 15 have already been completed.

NGO BLAMES HARMFUL CULTURAL NORMS FOR RISING GBV CASES

By Kalonje Mumba,

A non-governmental organization in Mufulira District, Buyantanshi Women Support Group (BWSG), says the continued rise in Gender-Based Violence (GBV) cases in the country is being driven largely by harmful cultural norms.

This comes in the wake of the recent killing of 57-year-old Kelita Phiri of Chibote Extension, who is alleged to have died at the hands of her husband following a domestic dispute.

Speaking in an interview with Mafken News, BWSG lawyer Theresa Mwenya says many women continue to suffer in silence as cultural teachings over the years have discouraged them from reporting abuse, instead promoting the idea that family matters should remain private.

And the organization’s Coordinator Boniface Ndjovu has expressed concern that such cases are still being recorded despite numerous awareness campaigns aimed at ending GBV in communities.

Mr. Ndjovu has urged members of the public not to remain silent when they suspect cases of abuse, adding that there is need to revisit cultural practices that discourage victims from speaking out.
