Zambezi River Authority Warns of Low Rainfall

By Staff Reporter,

The Zambezi River Authority has warned of an increased likelihood of below-normal rainfall across much of Southern Africa during the 2026/2027 rainy season, raising concerns over water availability for power generation at Kariba Dam.

In a statement, the Authority has allocated 23 billion cubic metres of water for electricity generation in 2027, with Zambia and Zimbabwe each receiving 11.5 billion cubic metres.

The allocation follows forecasts of strong El Niño conditions, which are expected to affect rainfall patterns across the region.

The Authority says Lake Kariba’s water levels have improved significantly compared to the same period last year, with usable water standing at 23.77 billion cubic metres as of October 14, 2026, compared to 8.25 billion cubic metres in 2025.

However, the Authority projects that water utilisation for power generation could leave the lake with only 5.83 billion cubic metres of usable water by the end of 2027, equivalent to nine percent of live storage.

The Zambezi River Authority says it will continue monitoring water levels and coordinating with ZESCO and Zimbabwe Power Company to ensure compliance with the approved allocations and respond to changing hydrological conditions.

MOTHER ARRESTED FOR ALLEGED INFANTICIDE AFTER THREE-WEEK-OLD BABY FOUND DEAD IN WELL IN KALULUSHI.

By Staff Reporter,

The Zambia Police Service has arrested a 21-year-old woman in connection with the death of her three-week-old baby, who was allegedly thrown into a well in the Kakonge area of Kalulushi District.

Police Public Relations Officer Chipo Kaitisha said the matter was initially reported as a case of child stealing by the woman, identified as Grace Shilimbwene, of Wusakile Township in Kitwe District.

Ms Shilimbwene reported the alleged theft at 09:00 hours on October 13, 2026, stating that her baby, identified as Lubuto Simiti, had been stolen by an unknown person.

However, police investigations subsequently established that the mother had allegedly thrown the infant into a well in a nearby village.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident allegedly followed a dispute involving two men with whom the suspect had been in relationships, who were reportedly in disagreement over the child's paternity.

With the assistance of firefighters, the baby was retrieved from the well but was found dead.

The body has since been deposited at Kalulushi District Hospital mortuary, pending a post-mortem examination.

Police have opened a case of infanticide, and the suspect has been arrested and detained in police custody as investigations continue.
