On 16 June 1976, The Youth of South Africa stood up for their right to learn.
That struggle shaped our country.

Today, investing in youth means building pathways into the workforce by equipping them with the skills, confidence, and opportunities they need to succeed.

That's work worth honouring.

And work worth continuing.

Today we commemorate Youth Day.

A full course library is not a learning strategy.

Buying more content, building more courses, and expanding the library opens more learning opportunities, but it tells you nothing about whether anyone is performing better because of it.

A learning strategy shows up in business metrics. Time-to-competency becomes shorter. Error rates drop. Sales teams hit targets faster after onboarding.

Those are the numbers that earn L&D's place in the budget. Not how many courses are available, but what changed after people took them.

L&D needs to prove its value in business terms, not learning terms.

Josh Bersin – global HR and L&D analyst, and one of the most cited voices in the industry – has been saying this for years. L&D teams that report in learning metrics will always struggle to justify their seat at the table.

The shift from reporting activity to demonstrating impact is where NLT focuses its work with clients. Measurement starts before the programme is built, not after it's been delivered.

Because if you can't connect learning to business outcomes, you're not speaking the language that gets budget approved.

Happy World Environment Day. 🌍

Sustainability isn't only about the planet. It's also about building organisations that last.

The businesses thinking long-term about their environmental footprint are often the same ones thinking long-term about their people.

Investing in learning culture is the same logic. You're building something that compounds over time.

The next generation inherits what we build today.
In business and on the planet.

When engagement drops, the instinct is to produce more content.
But more content won’t fix your engagement problem.

As Michael Hanly, MD of New Leaf Technologies, puts it: "People today are overstimulated and overloaded. There just isn't enough time in the day."

Layering more content on top of that only speeds up disengagement.

How learning is structured, delivered, and experienced is what needs to change.
The organisations getting this right have stopped measuring completions and started measuring behaviour change. They're treating learning as a living product designing, testing, and continuously improving.

Fix the mechanics. The engagement follows.

L&D teams lose budget fights because they speak pedagogy instead of profit.
As Michael Hanly, MD of New Leaf Technologies, puts it: "Where boredom wins, learning fails." CFOs don't need convincing that boredom is bad. They need to see what disengagement is costing the business.

The disconnect isn't about the quality of your programmes, but about the language you're reporting in.

When L&D speaks in completions and satisfaction scores, finance hears activity, not impact. If you translate that into productivity, retention, and performance the conversation changes entirely.

Your subject matter expert has the knowledge. Your L&D team has the skill. The problem is the process sitting between them.

SME availability is one of the biggest blockers in course development.

The process often involves lengthy interview schedules, back-and-forth email chains, document reviews that sit in someone's inbox for two weeks.

By the time the knowledge is extracted, a month has passed before development even begins.

The fix isn't asking SMEs to be more available. It's changing how knowledge moves from expert to course.

Instead of lengthy interview cycles, try this:

- Have SMEs record short, informal walkthroughs of their process
- Use structured input templates they can complete in their own time
- Let them review AI-assisted drafts built from a brief they've already provided

The goal is shifting from sequential handoffs to parallel workflows. Instead of waiting for each other, your SME and your L&D team are working at the same time.

The fastest way to speed up course development? Change how knowledge moves from expert to course.

Your training programme worked perfectly last quarter. That's the problem.

Business environments don't stand still. Products change. Processes shift. Compliance requirements evolve. But the courses built around them often don't.

A course that was relevant six months ago may already be losing its edge. Even if it was designed well, it was designed for a moment that has passed.

The fix isn't simply building faster, but building so that your content can adapt.

Two things make this possible:
- Modular design, which lets you update individual components without rebuilding entire programmes
- Adaptive pathways, which tailor learning to what each person actually needs
