Filing season opened this morning.

Between now and 12 July, SARS will send around six million real auto-assessment messages. Scammers will send the fakes inside the same window.

Three signs it’s a scam, not SARS:

1. It pressures you to act (“respond within 24 hours” or “your account will be flagged”).

2. It contains a link, button, or QR code.

3. The sender is not .gov.za — and the only official SARS WhatsApp is 0800 11 7277.

SARS won't WhatsApp you.

SARS won't send you an SMS with a link.

SARS won't ask you to "verify your refund" by clicking anything.

But this July, somebody pretending to be SARS will.

Three signs the "SARS notice" your bookkeeper just forwarded is a scam:

1. It uses pressure — "respond within 24 hours" or "your account will be flagged".

2. It contains a link, button, or QR code to "view your statement" or "verify".

3. The sender's email domain doesn't end in .gov.za. One extra letter or hyphen is enough.

If it landed in your business inbox, treat it as if it might be the one your team falls for.

One scam can become a POPIA breach. Tax records are personal information under the Act, which means a successful scam isn't just a stolen payment, it's a notifiable incident with the Information Regulator.
