Norway-based Ocean Sun was founded three years ago with the aim of disrupting the status quo in the solar industry. Its vision is to provide the technology that rapidly makes clean energy production the cheapest alternative to large populations around the world.

To achieve this, it has developed technology that will enable large-scale solar developments on coastal seawater, lakes, and reservoirs. The products are dubbed floaters, the flagship product has a diameter of 72m with an area of approximately 4000m2. They are based on utility type, dual-glass, crystalline silicon modules with a customized junction box, cables, and attachment features.

Researchers have developed a nanoscale coating for solar cells that enables the cells to absorb about 20 percent more sunlight than uncoated devices.

Nanoresonator coating, consisting of thousands of tiny glass beads, deposited on solar cells. The coating enhances both the absorption of sunlight and the amount of current produced by the solar cells.

'BioSolar Leaves' are better at cleaning the air than trees says Julian Melchiorri, Founder and CEO of Arborea.

Arborea is a food-tech start-up that applies break-through proprietary biological and chemical engineering technology platforms to produce healthy food ingredients at low-cost and massive scale to help food producers build a food system where everyone eats well.

At first glance BioSolar Leaves might look like bright green solar panels. But instead of generating electricity, these structures are teeming with microscopic plant life that can purify the surrounding air and produce nutritious ingredients for food.

Arborea is cultivating the bio-organisms on a panelling system that can be installed on buildings or land, much like solar panels.

A new form of renewable energy research is underway at the University of Lagos’ department of botany, which seeks to harness the huge opportunity of microalgae in the energy mix.

Dr Adesalu Taofikat Abosede is undertaking the research on the procedure, which is cited to support other forms of renewable energy in solving Nigeria’s electricity supply challenges.

Abosede, informed the media that direct saponification-esterification conversion (DSEC) can be used to convert microalgae into biodiesel in a cost-effective manner. DSEC has the potential, when commercialised, to provide a new world of opportunities for clean, alternative energy in Nigerian homes, especially in rural areas, stated the university lecturer.

Chilly's Bottles was founded in 2010 by James Butterfield and Tim Bouscarle, with the aim of providing people with the ability to always have cold water on-the-go, without having to buy single-use plastic water bottles.

The result was the Chilly’s Bottle. A modern and stylish product designed to combine the convenience of a plastic water bottle, with the high performance technology and eco-friendly benefits of a traditional flask.

In pursuit of their mission they have expanded the range to include a wider selection of reusable products with many more exciting products in development!

Rethaka (South African company) recycles plastic bags, turning them into schoolbags that have built-in solar power packs.

Reabetswe Ngwane and business partner Thato Kgatlhanye personify social entrepreneurship. The pair has designed schoolbags, through their company Rethaka, that do more than carry books; they help children read them too.

Kgatlhanye came up with the idea and, unsurprisingly, the young woman was named first runner-up at Anzisha Prize.

China plans to build $3 billion-worth of solar farms shaped like giant pandas

The idea for a panda-shaped solar plant came from Hong Kong teenager Ada Li Yan-tung. She presented her vision at a United Nations youth climate conference in 2015.

When the teenager came up with the idea of building a solar farm shaped like a panda, she hoped merely to draw people’s attention to sustainable energy options.

In 2017, the groups built a 248-acre solar power plant in Daton, China, that looks from above like two smiling pandas. Now the UN, Panda Green Energy, and the Chinese government are on a mission to build 99 more similar solar farms across China.

These “biosolar panels” suck CO2 from the air to grow edible algae

In London, scientists are testing the “BioSolar Leaf,” which uses carbon-hungry organisms to help clean the air better than trees can–all while providing an excellent source of protein.

“We call it a ‘BioSolar Leaf,'” says Julian Melchiorri, CEO of Arborea, the company that designed the new technology. “It uses solar energy, but instead of converting solar energy into electricity [like a solar panel], we convert solar energy into food.” Microalgae are already used in food, but the new panels use a proprietary production process that makes growing them less expensive, more scalable, and results in a higher quality product.
