Clean Analysis: It’s about the people

In 2002 / 2003, we just finished version one of a brand-new system that will handle all vehicle and driver registrations and licences in South Africa, called eNaTIS at the time.

We came up with a browser-based user interface – very good looking. It opened new browser windows for each transaction, enabling multiple parallel transactions. We were very impressed with our creation.
Then, we did a user test and allowed regular users to perform transactions on our new fancy user interface.

What a mess!! The users got all confused with multiple browser screens, forgetting which was which and clicking on the wrong ones, and some screens even timed out. The browser forms also did not help with speed – these users used to capture a form in a few seconds.

We ended up redesigning the user interface.
