There's a moment every entrepreneur knows — the moment you stop waiting for someone else to give you a chance, and decide to build it yourself.

That moment, for me, was VanArkel-IT.

I'm Riaan De Jongh van Arkel. My background is in IT support — the kind where you actually pick up the phone, actually show up on-site, and actually fix the problem instead of reading from a script. Somewhere along the way I got tired of watching small businesses in Cape Town get treated like they were too small to matter. Overcharged. Under-explained. Passed between call centres for a problem that should've taken ten minutes.

So I started VanArkel-IT to do it differently.

It's Patch Tuesday 🛠️ — if your computer's been nagging you to restart and install updates, don't ignore it this month.

Security researchers have found a SharePoint bug that's already being used by attackers to break into unpatched systems — and it can let them keep access even after you patch. Most small businesses don't run SharePoint, but the lesson still applies: attackers watch for these monthly updates and go looking for systems that haven't installed them yet.

3 quick things to check this week:
✅ Don't dismiss that Windows update prompt — let it install
✅ Make sure auto-updates are switched on for Windows & Microsoft 365

⚠️ Heads up, especially if you're a business owner: SARS has just issued a fresh warning about a new wave of tax season scam emails and SMSes — and this round is harder to spot than usual because scammers are now using AI to generate convincing, professional-looking messages that closely mimic real SARS communication.

What to watch for:
• Messages claiming you're owed a refund, with a link to "claim" it
• Urgency — "act now" or threats of penalties
• Any request for your banking details, OTP, or eFiling login

A simple rule: SARS will never ask for passwords, OTPs, or banking PINs via email or SMS — and never sends links to click. If in doubt, log into eFiling directly rather than clicking anything.
