- Coding workshop hosted by Lehlohonolo Nolo Mokoena💙
On Saturday, the 18th of April, bright and early, young minds took their first steps into tech at our Coding Crash Course – Learn and Build (Scratch Edition) with Women in Tech® South Africa 💻✨
Designed for ages 9–12, the session welcomed a wider range of learners, creating an inclusive environment where both girls and boys could learn, explore, and build together.
Learners were introduced to the foundations of coding, starting simple and building their understanding step by step. They discovered that coding is essentially giving clear instructions to a computer, and that there are multiple ways to solve problems, with room to improve and think creatively.
They also learned that when things don’t work as expected, it’s called a bug, and fixing it is debugging, an important mindset that builds resilience and problem-solving skills.
Through relatable, real-world examples, learners explored basic logical thinking (like everyday decisions and true/false scenarios), making these concepts accessible and age-appropriate.
Using Scratch, they built one simple “Under the Sea” game 🌊🐟
– A fish that follows the mouse pointer
– A puffer fish that inflates and swims away when touched
– A shark that follows the fish and says “Game Over” once the fish is caught
While the game itself was simple, it unlocked something powerful: creativity. Learners now have the foundation to expand, improve, and bring their own ideas to life.
What stood out most was the shift from simply following steps to beginning to think logically, experiment, and create with confidence — the true building blocks of future innovators 🚀
This is just the beginning, and we’re excited to grow this into more structured, age-appropriate learning journeys.
