A few years ago, after surviving cancer, two brain aneurysms, and then living through the pandemic like everyone else, I realised something about myself: I'd become a complete homebody.
I genuinely love working from home. I love the peace and quiet, the relaxed PJ lifestyle, my cosy little house in the countryside, and spending my days coding away with my three cats for company. To be honest, I'm perfectly happy living this way.
But there has always been one thought sitting quietly in the back of my mind.
If something happened to me overnight, how long would it be before anyone noticed?
For me, it might only be a few days over a weekend thanks to the work I do. For others, it could be much longer. We've all heard stories of people living alone who weren't discovered for weeks, months, or even years. It's rare, but it does happen.
As someone with tech skills, I decided to stop worrying about it and build something that could help.
The result is YourPING - a simple daily check-in service for people who live alone, work remotely, have a small social circle, distant family, or simply want the reassurance that somebody would notice if they suddenly stopped checking in.
You choose a daily check-in time. If you don't respond, reminders are sent via browser notifications, SMS, and email. If there's still no response, trusted contacts can be alerted.
It's not a medical alarm or a care service. It's simply peace of mind.
I built it because modern life can be surprisingly isolated, and I know I'm not the only person who's ever had that thought in the back of their mind.
