Big Love for Bury St Edmunds! Delighted to be invited by the STARZ embroidery group to give a show-and-tell on Goldwork. From learning at the RSN to my own interpretations using Coronation techniques, I tried to cover it all. Thank you so much for the warmest of welcomes and lovely reactions! Thanks to my beloved for being the patient luggage-wrangler, techspert and lovely hubby!
And a big shoutout to Hendo’s: the BEST fish & chips we’ve ever, EVER tasted! They were so good I wanted to cry! Make a special trip to Bury- they’re one of a kind!

⭐️ Falling for Goldwork 3: The last in the series about creating a goldwork embroidered lectern fall for the Worshipful Company of Gold & Silver Wyre Drawers.

The GSWD coat of arms at the top is stitched in Or Nue, a goldwork embroidery technique sponsored by the Company on the RSN Stitchbank this year.

A treasure of the GSWD would not be complete without our precious wire; so the piece includes a wooden reel wound with fine silver and 18ct gold round wire.

The piece was mounted, edged and attached to a matching board to remain balanced on the lectern.
Techniques

And for those in the know, the work uses Or Nue, cutwork, applique, couching, and stumpwork
Materials include Gilt & silver plate: bright and wire check, smooth and rough purl, crimped plate, millary wire, Japanese soft, Rococco, Twist, pearl purls, spangles and kid leather. Stitched to calico-backed velvet.

The Honeybee is in: Stranded DMC lumiere padded body in long & short and Turkey rug stitch. Wired organza wings with fil a gant veins, bead eyes. Worked as a slip and applied.

It was my great honour for Andrew and I to be invited to the white-tie dinner at Drapers' Hall, at which the lectern fall made its debut.

So many thanks to (now) Past Master Catherine Carr, and all those who helped and contributed to this lovely work.

⭐️ Falling for Goldwork 2: Creating a goldwork embroidered lectern fall for the Worshipful Company of Gold & Silver Wyre Drawers presented a wonderful opportunity to depict the company's values.

My first idea was literally a 'back of an envelope' design. The company motto evoked a strong image in my mind of a bobbin throwing out gold and silver wire into a heart shape. As is so often the case, the first idea turns out to be the best.

The design developed into a stylised depiction of interconnected golden hearts with a molten silver centre - some of which overspills. The metal is collected as wire to a bobbin, which then weave and intertwine as they are ’drawn’ down by two stylised hands. Finally the threads create the Company motto, "Love Draws Friendship."

A life-size honeybee at the base represents our beekeeping Master Catherine Carr, who commissioned this work as a gift to the Company. It's also a nod to the fact that Goldwork embroidery uses thread conditioned with beeswax.

Be back tomorrow for more about this precious embroidery!

⭐️ Falling for Goldwork 1: This is one of those incredible projects that are so unique, they may only come along once in a lifetime. This is the case with this one-off goldwork embroidery for the Worshipful Company of Gold & Silver Wyre Drawers. Completed and launched at the close of last year, the work is finished as a lectern fall, which decorates a stand used in speeches by the Master and guests at dinners. Remember the embroidered honeybee? 🐝 Well here he is taking pride of place at the base of the work; I'll tell you why in the next post!

As a special piece of work, the Master Catherine Carr and several of the Company's freeman embroiderers contributed a ceremonial stitch to the work. Many thanks to all you incredible stitchers!
