I love drawing inspiration for my games and campaigns from history. There’s so much rich content, and plenty of intrigue, wars, and much more! Many of the lore pieces I’ve posted have been to varying degrees influenced by historical events or figures.

Pictured here is Ardvreck castle located in the Scottish highlands. This now ruined castle sits on the banks of Loch Assynt, and was the first of its kind I saw in person. The location is beautiful, and the castle imposing even in its diminished state.

I’ll post these pictures I took today, and then next I’ll give you some fantasy lore that uses this castle and its history as inspiration!

Continuing on our tomb theme, here are some options for tomb protections. These can be used as obstacles and enemies for your players to overcome when exploring tombs.

Keep the ideas here in mind when constructing your tomb, and use them to help build a theme throughout the dungeon. Having a few mummies prior to the mummy lord boss fight works great as thematic foreshadowing that feels natural.

A powerful duke returns and rallies his troops against the king and his advisors. He calls traitor, claiming they’ve used their position to their own benefit at the expense of the kingdom.

He comes not as a conqueror, but as a liberator and one who is wholly loyal to the king. However, private ambitions may see him further than just that…

In any case, war is almost inevitable. Both sides prepare for battle, with rule of the kingdom hanging in the balance.

This character is heavily inspired by a historical figure, can you guess which one?

We’re happy to announce a much needed update for our “City of NPCs”. Being one of the first supplements we released, we’ve learned a lot since then and have made a ton of improvements to our layout and design.

The updated version features a new cover image and an updated layout that will make it easier to use and navigate. There are also a handful of updates to the content to improve some of the descriptions.

If you previously grabbed the supplement then you can get the updated version for free by redownloading it on DriveThruRPG. If you haven’t, there’s never been a better time to do so!

Here’s a sample page of one of the tables, along with some of the art you’ll find inside.

A simple statue that holds a terrible secret. Inside, an ancient evil kept in check by the shamanistic magics known only to the tribes living deep in the untamed jungles.

Your task is to find one of these shamans, and convince them to repair the bonds trapping the evil. The journey is long and dangerous, survival is unlikely. Time is of the essence too; everyday the evil in the idol grows stronger and closer to securing its release.
———

This is a plot hook with a jungle and exploration theme to it. When running it, play up the time constraints and slowly ramp up the problems the idol causes. The longer the party takes, the more powerful it becomes and the more dangerous as well.

We’ve got another release out today! D100 Things to Find in an Abandoned House.

It’s a bit shorter than our most recent release, but just as useful. In it, you’ll find 100 different rooms, decorations, and more to make your abandoned places feel “alive”.

Most are simple and meant to provide small details to fill out your world. Some could be used as hooks or clues to larger adventure. All of them provide you with quick and easy to use details to make your worlds more interesting to explore.

Check it out on DriveThruRPG or on our site. Let us know what you think, and what you want us to work on next!

Here are some tips for drawing borders for your worlds.

Geography can be a great starting point as it dictates how easy or difficult moving through an area is. A mountain or river, for example, can make passage to the other side difficult. There are countless examples of kingdoms and empires in history whose borders are defined by these geographic features. Other sorts of difficult terrain like forest, deserts, swamps, and oceans have similar effects to varying degrees.

When building your world and story, consider how these features might impact the people who live near them and how they might slow or even stop expansion.

Of course, these need not be hard obstacles. If there’s sufficient incentive to cross them, like valuable resources, then people absolutely will. The key is that the resources must justify the time and effort required.

Fantasy worlds make this even more interesting as things like magic can turn nearly impossible into trivial.

So, start with geography and keep it in the back of your mind, but don’t let it necessarily be a hard stop. If there’s a reason to push past, then people will.
