Remember when having a website meant you were officially “online”? 😂
You built it.
You published it.
You gave everybody the web address.
There was just one little problem:
Could anybody actually find it? 👀
As more businesses moved online, simply having a website wasn't enough. Search visibility became part of the marketing strategy.
That's where SEO became increasingly important.
Businesses began thinking about keywords, content, links, website structure, and the information people were actually searching for.
The conversation started shifting from:
“Do we have a website?”
to:
“Can the right people find us when they're looking for what we do?”
One thing I love about looking back at marketing history is realizing how many “new” lessons really aren't new at all. 😂
The technology keeps changing, but businesses are still trying to answer the same basic question:
How do we show up when the right person needs what we offer?
For those who remember the earlier SEO days, what do you remember businesses obsessing over most: keywords, backlinks, rankings, or something else?
And that was a major change.
Because a beautiful website sitting unnoticed on the internet wasn't doing much for the business.
The tools and tactics of SEO have changed tremendously since those earlier days, but the underlying marketing lesson still holds:
Being online and being findable are not the same thing.
Visibility matters.
But being useful when someone finds you matters even more.
