Meet Matilde, our inspiring volunteer from Italy!

For the past four months, Matilde has poured her time, energy, and passion into Stepping Stones International Primary School, Nkhata Bay and our community here in Nkhata Bay.

With her experience in social media, she organized a wonderful fundraising campaign with the help of her friends and family back home. Thanks to her determination, they raised enough to buy a wheelchair for one of our disabled nursery students at the school and support the salary of an assistant teacher.

This kind of thoughtful initiative makes a real, tangible difference for us as Butterfly space and what a volunteer can do. It helps us include every child, support our dedicated team, and keep our programmes running smoothly.

We are incredibly grateful to Matilde and every single person who supported her efforts. Your generosity is changing lives!

Meet Thomas, our dedicated volunteer from Denmark 🇩🇰

Over the past four weeks at Butterfly SpaceThomas has been supporting both our EARTH Workshops Malawi and Malawi Schools Permaculture Clubs(MSPC), bringing his knowledge of permaculture and regenerative farming into real, on the ground action.

From visiting villages and documenting workshops to connecting with communities and learning from daily life in Malawi, Thomas embraced every part of the experience with curiosity and care.

One of Thomas’s most impactful contributions has been cataloguing 25 indigenous edible tree species from Malawi and the surrounding region. He mapped out where seeds and trees can be sourced, created a seed sharing handout, and developed a list of important species that schools and villages can begin reintroducing and protecting. This work will continue to support permaculture learning and food sustainability long after he leaves.

Thomas also reminded us that volunteering here is about being proactive, curious, and ready to help shape your own tasks as plans evolve. His ability to work in a fast moving, dynamic environment made a real difference across multiple projects.

As he prepares to return home, Thomas hopes to build bridges between what he has learned here and communities back in Denmark and maybe even support Butterfly from afar.

We are grateful for the energy, knowledge, and kindness Thomas brought to Butterfly Space. It has been a joy having him here, and we hope this is not the last time our paths cross.

Meet Lindsay Wallace from Scotland! For almost a month, Lindsay has been an amazing support at Butterfly Space.

With her background in law, she worked on project management, reviewing and updating our projects to strengthen their impact.

Lindsay describes her time here as welcoming and full of learning, and we couldn’t agree more. It was truly wonderful having her around.
